LED Strips 12v
« on: Oct 11, 2012, 05:51 PM »
So where is the best place to buy LED strips? Looking to light my duck blind, figure its the same as a shanty so I'm asking here. I need two 3' strips (not rope light), 12 volt. I did my shanty with LEDs and it worked perfect, looking to do the same with my duck blind. I cant remember where I bought my LED strips for my shanty, but one 1' strip lights up my one man flip-over plenty. I think I'm going to need high-output ones, but not sure.

Ebay. I got the waterproof adhesive back SMD LED strips for my shanty. Some are brighter than others just search on the net. They are cheap enough you can buy a bunch of extras to keep on hand for other projects or for spares. I bought some red strips and made a replacement brake light for my dads truck cap. Lots of uses.

A few

I need the ones with the focused LEDs, not a flat one. Like this.

I need to light an area equivalent to about three 2 man shantys. I need enough light to see what you are doing moving decoys around, loading guns, setting up gear.. etc

Thanks for the link, that is where I bought the ones for my shanty. I just ordered 3 of the 48cm ones. Hopefully it will be enough light, if not I'll have to wire another one in.

Hope it works well for you. I used a piece of 1"x1" 1/8"tk aluminum angle I had to stick the LED strips to. I added some Marine GOOP to help secure the strips more. Screwed the angle/light assembly fast to the lip on the lift glass frame.

48cm (19 inch) white

I'm going to get some of the small ones (1.2inch) in UV and make some light boxes for glow jigs as the season gets closer.

I'm doing something similar, and mounting it to my marcum via velcro so I can run it right off of my flasher. LED strip pointing sideways, a small hole on top to drop the jig in. Should work great.

I got my strips today and just got finished installing them before it got dark. Three 19" strips is PLENTY. I wired them up to the deep cycle that runs the running lights and spotlight. The battery has been in there without being charged for almost 2 years. I flipped that switch and about blinded myself. Its light up brighter than the inside of my refrigerator. I cant imagine what it will look like on a fully charged battery.  :o

I'm sure one of these 19" strips will light a 1 man shanty like a spotlight, two for a two man would be more than enough.

Tomorrow I'll finish taping everything up and hopefully take a few pictures tomorrow evening.

Use decal tape or double sided tape to mount?

Tacked it up where I wanted it with hot glue. Tomorrow I'll be drilling holes and securing them with zip ties.

Neither. Zip-ties here. I wouldn't trust tape entirely in the cold on something that thin and flexible.

Also, consider adding red lighting to your white lighting as well. If you're chasing flags at night, the bright light will wreck your night vision. Use the reds as much as possible.

I bought a 5 meter roll of waterproof LEDs off Ebay to do my boat lighting as well as some other projects. I think I paid $18 shipped for the whole roll. The boat turned out sweet. They have so many uses. The flat strips on the rolls seem to give a better light spread versus the ones that are fully encased in rubber(or whatever it is) with the little nubs on every LED. I highly recommend getting the snap on style connectors for running the power leads. I have tried soldering them and it is a PAIN. The beauty of the rolls is that you can cut the roll every third LED to make strips of any size. Very versatile in that respect. You can get the rolls in many different colors too. I will be making a jig lighting contraption soon for this ice season...

I just finished putting some LEDs up in my Rover 1.0   I posted it in the Ice Shacks section but you can get an idea of the light output.

I have been debating what to use as well. I have two sleds to do. Has anyone used the clam light/fan combo?I thought of using a light that can be used in both sleds. I have the small one, but not used it that much. Used it once in a camping tent this summer. It worked pretty good. I have been thinking about getting thr bigger one. Any thoughts.

I got a 30 led light strip from midwest wheel for $30 and its made to install in tractor trailers. I have used it for over 2 years and its awesome. It takes many trips an many hours to drain the battery. The batt is like the ones that come with portable fishfinders, I got it at mills for $20. I use it in my clam guide and it lights it up very well.

My friend had the Clam light/fan and it sucked! The Frabill light is x10 better than the Clam piece of junk.

Ok. What so you use for switches? I can find 12v rocker switches on ebay. But my real question is this:
If my battery is a 12v 9ah battery, then do I have to match that on the switches? I see 12v 25A and 12v 6A.

What do I need?

Any switch will work.  Even 120 to 660 volt switches will work.

The reason there are switches for high voltage situations is the fact that at higher voltages, there can be arching between the contacts.  In high amperage situations, the contacts are larger.  For low voltage, low amperage situations like 1.5 to 24 volt DC, very small switches and light wire work just dandy.

BTW....a 1.5 volt alcaline battery can give up to 1 amp....maybe more.  One time, a 9 volt DC battery shorted on some change in my pocket....it got really really hot.  Too hot to hold in my hand.  I was driving at the time.
