Ice cleets for a post surgery knee
« on: Sep 24, 2012, 09:54 AM »
Last year at the end of January I slipped at the Willow Creek tourney.  As a result I tore my ACL and have had surgery to fix this.  I have always relied on my HT's for traction.  This year I think I will update my choice.  A pair of Yacktrax were suggested. Any other thoughts.  I am ready to fish ice again ready ready ready, but I want a more sure step.

I've got two titanium hips and enough hardware in my back to make a small spinning reel. My Stabilicers haven't let me down yet.

Got a pair of these two seasons ago, best cleats I've ever used.

Screw your boots up with slotted hex head sheet metal screws. You will never regret it!

I agree with skipper.  That method is the best going till ya walk inside on the wife's newly refinished wood floors. Actually  the screws work great  I only used about half what skipper did and it worked fantastic for only a couple of bucks

So far gentlemen I am liking the suggestions. The screws are a good idea but I also have wood floors and when I put on my packs there on for the day in or out. A second pair might be in line for the ice alone. I also have occasion to need cleats at work glare ice is hell on a touckes. ::)

I bought the HT's last year early.  First trip out, one of the front bands snapped.  Then I looked at my buddy's and his did the same.  They work OK, but still a little slip every now and then.  I then bought the Yak Trax (I think "Pros").  They have big ol triangle spikes on them.  Never slipped again and they are easy on and off.  I put them over my Muck Arctic Pros.

just be carefull. i have had 3 acl replacements in 5 years and tore one on the ice after a surgery.  It takes a minimum of 1 year before they are close to being back to full strength.  I reccomend good cleats but also wear a good solid knee brace on it. You sure dont want to have to go through it all over again.

When ice fishing is the game the one place you never want to skimp out is on your foot gear.  Even my 2 year old and 4 year old have cleats.  Wouldn't leave home without them.

The end of Jan is a year. And being I am Paying for the surgery I don't want to screw it up again ever. I am stretching and bowling, I look really funny throwing the ball. Short controlled steps. Where did all those muscles come from?

I have never tried screwing screws in the bottom of my shoes but I have cleats very similar if not the same as though microspikes suggested before.  You won't slip with those.  They are nearly Crampons.

Have a pair of these and love them, used them for 2 years now. Positively have traction with these. I had a couple of different brands that I picked up at the Army Navy store but they all broke the thin rubber straps or the wires breaking.
I was walking around on glare ice and never had a problem and my brother had on a set of the wire type and wasn't as sure footed and shuffled along.

I've got two titanium hips and enough hardware in my back to make a small spinning reel. My Stabilicers haven't let me down yet.

I'll second the vote for Stabilicers.  I've tried the YakTrax and they work OK under most conditions.  Their bane is loose powder snow on sheer ice.  They will pack up with fluffly snow and become flat dangerous.  Took a hard fall with them in those conditions some years ago.  Lucky it was a cold day and I had on a hat and a hood on to somewhat protect the back of my head bouncing off the ice.  Still saw stars in mid day and felt sick inside for about 3 days.

Switched to Stabilicers and haven't looked back.
