Home Made Ice Spikes/Yak Trax
« on: Aug 28, 2012, 03:09 PM »
With a large family and usually haveing 3 or 4 boys in tow while I am out ice fishing I was hopeing to make some ice spikes or yak trax on the cheap that would fit kids boots.   Any ideas or thoughts would be appreciated.

 I have boots that are strictly for the ice season. I put 1/4" sheet metal screws in the lugs of the boots. I can't wear them inside, but I NEVER slip on the ice. cost about $3.00 for the screws.

This IS the ticket if you have spare boots. I have spent all kinds of money on traction aids and none work nearly as good as sheet metal screws. with hex heads.

For about $7 a pair at the local bait shop I bought the HT brand slip on creepers for my kids . The picks are on the balls of the feet but work well for us and very affordable and easy to use.

I'm also a boot screwer... ::)

The ones on the front are for when I'm kneeling.

My 10 year old son uses these too. He wears a size 10 mens boot though! :o Not sure if they come in little kid sizes.

Tip.... warm them up on the pickup's defroster before you try to pull them on.

I usually just leave mine on the whole season, I'm sure that's part of the reason I only get about one season out of them...
