Whitefish and lakers today
« on: Feb 27, 2012, 08:49 PM »
Hi all,

Went out for Whitefish and lakers today with my buddy Carmon. Drilled holes in 34'FOW...did not have to move off that spot...got some tank whitefish and 2 decent lakers. Action was non-stop for whities and we missed a good 2 or 3 more lakers.

Definitely needed a good session....brought my lucky pink gloves with me....they worked their magic!

Variety of lures used...most successful were white tube jigs...crappie size and 4".

NICE GLOVES

Now, that is a good day.   Congratulations!

How far off the bottom were you fishing?  I have sometimes had to be right on the bottom, even touching bottom, to get whitefish on tube jigs.  Other times, they would hit really hard 10-15 feet off bottom.

If you could drop me a line about your next trip there ( I am guessing it's where I was with you before) I'd appreciate it. I don't have any poof gloves though!
Man I need to get some whiteys soon.
Glen
PS - Still looking at organizing a trip to Shoal - will keep you posted.

Thanks for the replies.

Yukoner....The whities today would only hit a non moving bait that was 5 - 8 feet off the bottom. Every now and then i'd send a heavier spoon down and pound the bottom which would get the fish moving again as the bite would switch on and off after around five minutes.

Merv...the pink gloves wiped away the white strips for sure!

Glenn, my next trip depends on who is going to be available to ferry my butt out there on a sled...i am sledless, But i want to get back in the next 2 weeks as the bite died off by the first week of march last year. When ya thinking about Shoal?  I was thinking that if the ice holds up i make the trip with the family. Would be nice to let ya meet Jack and Roloff in person.

That was some good fishing, reminds me of a lake named after a fish just north of Thunder Bay. Lots of huge(little heads and huge bodies) whitefish, one after another.
Awsem video that got my blood pumping.

Can't wait to get out this weekend.

Great post and excellent pics VC. The stomach contents there, are those young ciscoes or smelt? Did Shoal L. once so far this year, was rather slow in comparrison to last winter. We only managed to ice 6 huge whites between 3 anglers. Didn't mark much as well. Spectacular day weather wise and beautiful conuntry as well. Would certainly be interested in meeting people out there if a trip is organized.
