I would not for a minute even bother to run tip ups for lakers. Actively fish them...... Grab a sonar unit and force them to bite by making them commit and chase your bait. Fish deep water 60 plus.
I would way rather be fishing

If you can find steep drops or valleys under water fish them anywhere from a 1 to 4 feet off of bottom.  I like to set my traps the same distance down when I'm setting up blind.  I've also seen them taken near shore on salmon sets about a foot below the ice too.

First time I fished for lakers I was in 60 fow and was using my vex to set the depth.  The max depth of the lake is at least twice that.  I figured I'd set it within a couple feet of the bottom.  I saw a laker shoot up 30 feet to reach my bait.  So really I'm not so sure there is any preferred depth.

so work the water depth, from a few inches off bottom with dead bait to a few feet of the surface and if i get hits at one depth move them to that depth.. i also have a vex so if i start marking them up higher ill move them where they are.
