perch for bait

There is probably a thread already but does anyone use perch for pike bait.  And how do you set them up?

I did once when I ran out of large shiners.  I put a 3 or 4" perch on a red treble and rigged it through the back on top by the fin like I would a shiner.  It produced a 29" pike.

In NY, you can't use game fish as bait... My DEC Officer buddy said that because there is no limit on perch where we live, they are not considered a game fish and therefore can be used as bait.  Basically, if there is a size limit or a catching/keeping limit, you can't use them.

So because there is no "limit" on what you can keep, it no longer qualifies as a "game fish" by definition? Hmmmm...

in NY you can use perch or any fish for bait they just count towards your daily limit which means they have to be of legal size.... straight from the dec website "Baitfish or other legally taken fish species intended to be used as bait may only be used in the same water body (page 12) from which they were caught for bait in hook-and-line fishing... Any fish taken on a water body and used as bait counts toward your daily limit."

Now that is a decent regulation. Wyoming should take heed and consider adopting ssomething similar.

Perch make awesome bait for catfish too.

I know perch meat is great for catching perch too.  Cut into small strips...shaped like a small waxie or spike.
