How much wind does there need to be for a wind tipup or windlass to work well?

My Windlass sets have two springs. Each spring can be adjusted to provide the best action for the wind each day. One setting will work for low breeze and another for more windy days. The only wind conditions I have found to be difficult are on gusty days, when the wind varies.

PM me to swap information on fishing holes or to go fish'in sometime in the Syracuse Central NY area (Onondaga and Madison county water holes in particular).

Just make sure your wind foil points away from the incoming breeze. I watched  a guy this weekend who couldn't figure out how come his wind tip-up either pointed straight up or straight down.  ::)

Also, you can flatten out the bend in the pan to reduce the action; good for higher wind. I usually stack some shavings, and or some chunks of ice on the frame to stabalize the unit. Don't forget to put a hand on the spool when you set the hook; otherwise a mess will probably occur.
