Zercom power source
« on: Feb 11, 2005, 12:34 PM »
Bought a zercom on ebay last year.  I was wondering if I could use my ATV battery as the power source.  The idea would be to use alligator clips and hook it to the battery of the atv.  I am going to have it out there anyways, why lug out another battery?

it will work I have dun it but you will drain it down every time you use it and that is hardon that kind of battery thats why a boat battery is best or buy a flasher battery at cabelas and charger for 20.00

The gel cell described above is what I use for my Zercom Clearwater Pro...I've had no issues with battery life.  Get a trickle charger (< 1 amp) for these and leave it on when not in use - that is what they guys at the battery shop told me to do.

Another idea is to try to get a hold of the batteries that come out of emergency lighting - they are the 12 V, 7 A gel cells...apparently they have to be discarded when they hold something like 95% of charge because they are for emergency use when the power goes out.  It's handy if you know the right electrician to get a couple before they are sent for recycling.
