Visited with one of the folks at the weigh station yesterday afternoon just before closeing time.  Total of about 30 fish weighed in over two days...only one fish over one pound all weekend..... fish as small as two ounces being checked in.   If you have facebook the Pine Haven Chamber of Commerce has a facebook page & they have some pictures....last I check no results posted as of yet.

I'm not sure if any other shanty members placed in the derby.  I gave it my best and was only able to pull out three perch on Saturday but it was good enough for the two day largest stringer.  It was tough love and tough fishing out there this weekend not to even mention the rain and wind....  :-\

I fished both days to make it my 13 an 14th trip out there and still haven't caught a fish.  I fished mule creek first half of Saturday and then moved to Coulter Bay.  Sunday I fished south of Pats point.  The guys I fished near on Saturday morning could see northerns on their camera and had one break them off in mule creek.

Well I didnt name myself DeadSea for nothing. Fishin sucked to say the least. I did manage to get a $50 check just because no one caught a pike. But i tell you what, yes it was frusterating, but there are TONS and TONS of fish in there. We saw everything on the camera minus a pike, but the shear numbers of fish was astounding. Crappie swimming in schools of hundreds. We didnt move too much, but saw more active fish in 50-65 fow. I thought i had the smallest perch, which i did, but a .02 ounce crappie and others that size were being caught weighing in as much as a sharpie. But heres the deal, the next 3-4 years are going to be AWESOME at Keyhole, in my opinion. It is sad, however, that only one small fish (under a pound) won it! That group of guys won a cool 1000 bucks just for the first day. Not to shabby. We had fun though, drank lots of 'pops' and visited with Team Lightning. Very cool and nice guy! Thanks Leo.

DeadSeafisher, I know talk is cheap, but it is amazing to me that a eye just under a pound won largest fish. I was there two days before the derby and caught some pretty nice fish. I do know fishing can change from day to day and conditions were tough. I wish I could have made the Derby I had to work the weekend and could not get it off. i do believe like you that fishing will just get better in time. KH reservoir can be tough to figure out, it's not like any other body of water I have fished for Walleyes.

Sounds like your derby was a lot like the one I fished up in Montana this past weekend, really tough fishing.  From what I have read in reports from Montana, Wyoming, South Dakota and Nebraska it was tough fishing almost everywhere.  The lake I fished this weekend normally requires catching 200 perch per team to win the event.  This year there was only 2 teams that caught their 100 fish the first day and about 75 was the most day 2.  Last year the boy and I were 5th place for 2 days with 185 perch.  This year we caught 75 total for the 2 days and the winning team had either 170 or 175 for the 2 days.  So think weather and weird conditions this year are affecting fishing everywhere.

ironshafts,
KH can be a tough BOW to fish we all know that. This Derby they were some very good fisherman and women on the ice. I probably would have been right there with the rest of them. Allot of them have much better gear than I do, so it does not really matter what is on the end of you line as much as these things do.  We have all heard this stuff a thousand times, but take the time to think about these things.
LOCATION, TIME, PRESENTATION

LOCATION: Being in the right spot at the right time when the fish are there ready to feed is key.

TIME: Hardwater KH time of day is very important. I will tell you this, I would have been in a panic the first two hrs of the derby. Not saying you can't catch fish during the middle of the day.

PRESENTATION: I probably put the same stuff on that most everyone else does. I will tell you this I fish very seldom fish with tip ups at KH unless the fishing is hot. I use them more to tell me if active fish are in the area. Most time if I have a tip up that goes off I will take it out of the hole and start jigging it as soon as I can. I learned this from trips to FT Peck with good results. I do keep my own bait which can be a benefit. Another thing I do is look for bait fish or panfish most of the your Game fish should be within striking distance. Go smaller on your jigs I am not a fan of big bling.

I hope this helps a little. But remember Location, Time, Presentation and time spent on the water you will be successful.
If anyone else can help out please comment.

Fished Wind Creek and the Straights, Saw fish everywere but no bites.  Deeper we went, larger the fish were but still no bites. Watched my jig in the middle of a school of bass and they didn't even take notices. Not the first time I'll get skunked.  But I'm heading back, If you don't exceed try try again, but I'm bringing my fly box with me and try some aquatics. I figure it our eventually  ;D.
No one left behind.
