i made mine out of a old car leaf spring  for the chisel part and used  1" steel tubing about 6' in length and welded it together . I had to sharpen the car spring holds  a real good edge. had mine now for 5 years won't leave home without it.

I messed around making one for awhile before I got one I liked, I found that you had to have a long taper on the blade, not a short taper like a wood chisel.

Here's mine made from a solid steel rod & steel bar.

Don't have pics, but mine is made out a model T axle.  Welded on a 3/4 inch plate steel to end about 1 1/2 inch wide and sharpened so it would be an inverted V.  I like it - balanced, not to heavy to carry around yet enough weight to help chopping a hole.

Only thing I would change on it would be to weld another piece of metal to the upper end so it couldn't slip through my hands.  Or maybe drill a hole and thread a cord thru it to go around my wrist.  Been doing fine all these years though, more than likely will leave well enough alone.

OK, I'll fess up.  It was my father's who made it back in the 30's and used it the rest of his life.  I got it in in 1995 when he moved on to the big shanty and haven't found or saw anything better.  Still using some of his tip-ups when the grandchildren come along.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

do the serrated tips work better than a sharp edge? they look good but is it worth the extra work.i will put some kind of handle with a lanyard so i don't send it down a hole.

I think this is one of the best designs.  The stepped edge of the blade really gets the chips flying.  Starts the hole small and each successive whack makes a bigger hole while the tip still keeps digging.
