All lead free split shot now here in maine.  They can't sell lead split shot that weights less than 1/2 oz.   I use the ones with the tabs on the back that way I can grab them with cold fingers and open them or open them with my teeth.   I was always worried about the bobbers catching under the lip of the ice.  The buttons I had a real hard time sliding them up and down the line.  I got so mad the day I tried it I broke them off my line.  THat was the day I started using split shots.   ;D

cheap bobber stops, black rubber have always worked well for me.   hold on mono, fluoro or braid. bought mine on ebay. 144 for $3.00.  add a bead, button or just the stop if your eyes aren't as bad as mine.

Bobber stop is just a knot independent from your fish line that will slide. I tie my own and use heavier line than the commercial ones you buy. I used the button for years did not really care for them and this works better for me. several videos on you tube.

I usually use a sinker.  Was going through my tackle and found some Scotty Braided Line Aoto-Stop Beads.  Your line weaves back and forth through them and locks in place.  May be to awkward for cold hands but am going to give them a try.

I guess I'll stick with my slip knot and a piece of toothpick.

put me in with the guys using small buttons.  Usually fish shallow lakes and never had a problem with a shirt button.

I have used the mini bobbers in the past, for the most part they work.  Couple down falls I noticed - they float the line (this, on a rare occasion, can tangle the line on the spool/line guide, but not very often at all), the springs are weak and can slide on the line when pulling a fish through weeds without noticing, they are plastic and can break in the cold.

I have tried the slip bobber knots but found them to be a pain to adjust if you cinch them too tight or your line is frozen.  Also kind of a pain to adjust for large depth changes.

Lately I have just been tying a loop in my line.  It works nice for the most part and can be untied with a pair of forceps, but it's a pain to be messing with if you are adjusting your depth alot, especially in cold conditions.

I'm trying the buttons now.  If I find those to be a pain, probably try the rubber bands or twist ties next.

I am rarely fishing much over 15-20 feet deep, mostly in the 6-12 foot range, so I usually don't have much adjusting to do over large depth changes.

Buttons work great. And they are easy to move.

Buttons easy to move? Over 20-30' of wet frozen line, wetting your hands? I am glad they work for so many anglers, but I used them for a season and found them a pain in the a@@! The clips that I now use are cheap, don't get in the way and easy to move!
