Lake Poinsett area
« on: Jan 09, 2012, 10:31 PM »
Just stumbled on the website and gotta say some great info.  Hard to find good info about South Dakota fishing so it is nice to have found this site.

Have been to Waubay/Webster once about 7-8 years ago and had a blast.  Would like to get back to the area and a buddy told me about the Lake Poinsett area.  Thinking of making a mid-winter trip and would like to explore this area and have Waubay as a back up.  Not looking for GPS coordinates but just some general info and places to stay in the area and whether it is worth the trip to Poinsett or do I just head for Waubay/Bitter.

Thanks

Thanks for the info WF.  Still learning the site so ai haven't been able to figure out how to PM yet.  I would love to get out there sooner but with my son playing basketball I don't have an open weekend until the last weekend of Feb.

Well put it this way. Monday evening a guy got turned around on his directions trying to drive his quad back to shore. He drove into open water and they found him yesterday forenoon.

The ice on Lake Thompson was fairly good during the Holidays (7-9").  I fished it all through Christmas and New Years's.  Walleye and Perch were biting there as well.  Good luck on Poinsett.

Ice on Poinsett and sourrounding lakes is decent. 8-14 inches in most places. You must know the lakes though as there is still spots that are very dangerous  :-\
