Shanties on Waterbury Res?
« on: Jan 08, 2012, 10:18 AM »
Anyone know of the latest conditons on Waterbury Resovoir after the rain and warm weather? Is the ice thick enough for 2-3 people in a pop-up shanty. I may bring my 7 year old nephew, and perhaps his buddy, but they get cold, and wet easy. If no shanty, no 7 year olds!

I ended up checking it out yesterday. Loads of smelt again this year! I was surprised how much water you had to walk through to get to the ice though. :-\

Ours went out on Saturday
Did lose some ice Friday with the warm weather
There was around 3 1/2 4" under the shanty
We pulled ours out by hand.
Not quite enough for a wheeler yet.

Was it the guy with your group that fell? Boy he hit the ice real hard!!! Is he okay?...

Ok so i have heard some pros and cons about waterbury resivior. i want to go up there and try to fish for smelt this year. i am die hard ice fisherman who loves to fish for smelt, perch, and crappie through the ice. so where do i go for the smelt on the resevior? What do you use for bait there? do you use hali jigs? is it better fishing at night or during the day there. Thanks for the info.

well for anyone who hasn't fished waterbury, just so it's not a surprise they do have drainoffs each year, so when you pop a hole and look down and there isn't anywater for 7 ft or so, don't freak out!
