You still have to have the registration transferred from his name to yours.

Here is the link to NYS DMV what you are looking for is about 1/2 way down. For the issuance part look at Geico or Progressive I think you only need minimal coverage.

P.S. The registration fee is cheaper if you join a snowmobile club and obtain the registration voucher.

see now this is on the 4th site this says the only thing about insurance in  sites and says this... All snowmobiles operated on any part of a roadway or shoulder of a highway in New York State must be covered by minimum liability insurance. so dose that apply to ice fishing?

Yeah, as long it's not a "high theft risk" snowmobile limited coverage is fine. That's all I have on my sleds and bride the trails around here with them.

I know in Ontario they have to be insured unless you are a licenced trapper. Last sled we had costed $300/year to insure.

what do u mean got it to cross roads? if i just rode it on the lake would i need it insured? also what if the guy said that i could ride it in his name with the title transfered to mine? all he has done is signed the back and its current till sept. and i really dont see a need in redoing it because he just did it when he gave it to me. and i didnt get a bill of sale or anything just the registration with his signiture on the back, and the new 2012 stickers.

Page 9 from the NYS Snowmobile Guide.

Insurance
All snowmobiles must be insured unless they are operated solely on property owned or leased by the owner of the snowmobile.
New York State Parks law requires snowmobilers to carry liability coverage in the minimum amount of $10,000 for an accident involving one person, $20,000 for an accident involving two or more persons, and $5,000 for property damage from one accident.
Proof of insurance must be carried by the snowmobiler and must be displayed on request of any magistrate, law enforcement officer, or anyone who has suffered personal injury or property damage as a result of the snowmobiler’s actions.

You need insurance for anywhere other than you private property.

Does my snowmobile require a registration in New York State?

You must register your snowmobile if you operate the snowmobile in New York State. A registration is not required if the snowmobile is operated on the private property of the owner or private property the owner has a contractual right to use. A snowmobile that is registered in another state and owned by a resident of that state, but is operated in NYS, must get a NYS registration. A non-resident of NYS with a snowmobile registered in another state can apply online for a NYS snowmobile registration. A temporary NYS registration is issued at the end of the transaction for immediate operation of the snowmobile in NYS.

New York State also requires a NYS or out-of-state registration on trailers.

Cut out the middleman, go right to the source. Call DMV and ask. Explain your situation and get a definitive answer. If you get checked by warden etc and for some reason you are illegal, watta ya gonna say, buncha guys on a website said it was cool? Good luck.... Rott
