3rd time was the charm...

I had been out twice so far this season and not iced a fish... We fixed that today in a big way
Mike, Josh and I took my truck, Dino and Steve drove up in Steve's. We fished the northern edge of the Berkshires on a small lake. I never did measure, but there was a solid 4-5" all the way out to where we fished. The wind was gusting over 35, so Mike and i got going on setting up the shanty and anchoring it down while Josh popped the holes for us.
I scouted a few holes with the flasher and was marking pretty good in one particular hole so I started setting my tip ups there. The shiner didn't even make it to the bottome before I got whacked. It was a just a small pickerel, but the skunk was gone. I reset the tip up and beforfe I could turn around, the flag popped again... Another rat. We only had 4 dozen shiners between us so I decided to make a go with just the jigging rods.
The other guys managed to get a few tip ups in but quickly got to jigging.
It was fast and furious for a couple of hours. Tons of perch and too many pickerel to count. Josh decided to take a few small pickerel for dinner and a few to try as bait for pike later on the coves. It didn't take long to get all he needed
We didn't have any real big baits, so we jigged up a few micro perch and put them on a the flags. Dino's went up shortly after putting one on the hook
Things quieted down around 11 so I headed for the shanty. I set the flasher up inside and was pleasantly surprised to see a few fish on the Humminbird.
Out of the wind, I finally got to play with my Frabill Straight Lines... I had a blast with them. Lots of perch and a few more slime darts. A couple of the perch were pushing 14"
There will be much better fishing for me soon, but for now, it sure felt great to finally get into a mess of fish. I think we got some decent video while jigging today. If I get some time tonight, I'll post it here...

Kool, itching for some jiggin'.
Do you notice a big difference in line twist w/ the straight lines?
And, does the plastic help keep the cork from getting slimy
. BTW I do the same thing unless there is a price tag under it.

Actually, the reason for the plastic is that I was too lazy to remove the reel... Some rocket scientist at Frabill, put the reel on along with the tape on OVER the plastic wrap
I guess that's how they make sure they sell some reel tape...

I notice a lot of the packages are now shipped and sold with heat shrink to secure the reels too. Wouldn't want a heat gun anywhere near new mono.
That Pickerel cord wood shot is original

Those pictures are really nice...I was beginning to forget what ice fishing looks like, man it looks like a completely different world compared to what we have around here just waiting for the ice to appear. Glad you guys had yourselves a successful outing.
As an FYI to pass on to Josh-pickerel makes a nice fish chowder. Poach the fish whole and the fillet falls from the bones as you remove it from the pan. Then break the fillet apart to remove the smaller y-bones. Use any fish chowder recipe and use the pickerel for the added fish.

Can't use pickerel as bait anyways unless the 2012 angler guide changed it's rules:
According to 2011 definition
BAIT Any animal or vegetable, or their parts, living or dead, used with
a hook for the purpose of attracting and catching fish. Any fish legally
acquired, except largemouth bass, smallmouth bass,
chain pickerel
,
northern pike, trout, salmon, carp and goldfish may be used as bait.

Love pickerel, they're good for breaking the skunk.
Can't wait to get on the ice myself.

I wasn't sure at first, but the more fish I caught on it, the more I liked it. I can't wait to try them on the BIG crappie we get in deep water. I lose a few big ones every year because I reel too quickly. The rods have a soft tip to absorb the big head shakes and the reel is a 1:1 to I can't reel too fast

That place is loaded with Slime Darts and Dink Perch. It is always windy too. I can't stand fishing there. Glad to see you were brave enough to fish there...
