Private Messages

I recently received a private message. I opened it, and had no problem reading it. However, when I went to thank the gentlemen that messaged me it said I was unable to write private messages. Does anyone know why this is the case? I'm thinking it may be my computer or something but just seeing if anyone else has had this problem. Thanks
