Crappie Division in the derby??
« on: Dec 13, 2011, 04:30 PM »
I find myself fishing for them more and more.  Not sure if I want them targeted in the derby though. Seems to be a good population of them. What does everyone else think, and will you fish for them in the derby???  ??? ???
Trust me, there's plenty of ice..

I have had to work every derby weekend for the last 4 years with the exception of Saturday last year. I will more than likely be working it again this time around. I love my rainbows and target them even on non derby days ( last time I fished all of the derby I got 3 with tags all shorts). I think this may spark my interest though to at least have a almost guaranteed money fish. I know of multiple spots along with Jiffyman that could see a new state record come out of at anytime. I think I could see myself pulling a trap and chasing those guys.

You are not sure if you want to target them? Or you are not sure if it is a good idea for them to be targeted? I don't think it will affect their numbers in the least just because of this derby AT ALL.

I don't think I will target them at the derby as I don't fish for them enough. I assume some big ones come out of the big lakes too, it will be a hard catagory to be on the board with.

The derby has a set min. length for entry=so that will get people thinking that if they get something that is 1-2" under they will most likely let it go back in the hole/unless they are planning on keeping it to eat.

No I think your right.  If anything it will help keep there numbers in check. I will agree, It shouldn't be to hard to get one on the board. I have seen jiffyman out there in years past, and there are some big one's around.. I might fish for them one of the days, but it will be hard to not target white and yellow perch and lakers..

Decisions, decisions. I know I will second guess myself no matter what I do, if I get the oppurtunity to fish it this year.

I am setting a personal goal this year to make it the whole season jigging Crappie, whities etc...... with only plastics and hardware, no live bait of any form. Just something I want to experiment with and think it will make me a better fisherman in the long run.

Still haven't hopped on the Tungsten wagon yet but am planning on it, I mean why wouldn't you. As for the fish fry I did extremely well with them this past season.
