The worst thing I had while keep the cooler out on the porch was the stones freezing up. I cure that by keeping the air pump inside and burying the cooler in snow. I did have to break out the ice a couple times a week and add water. This year is different because there is no snow, ice or need for bait. :'(

get a working chest freezer plug it into a timer set for 2 hrs on low it will keep you bait like they are on steroid's with good filtration of coarse.

Just worried that your filter will freeze up and burn out your pump.
I bought a submersible pump that troughs off just enough heat to keep it from freezing up. No ice in my chest freezer just a little crystallizing on the cracked open lid. Its been - 37 C to -40 C here for the last couple of nights.

I was concerned about that as well but the guy at Pet-Co said as long as the water is moving it will not freeze. He said there are a few guys with this set up and they say its the best. Time will tell.

Do you have a filter set up like this? What keeps the water that cold? I want to rig it so it also keeps the water cool apr-july.

i just use the chest freezer on a timer with a statue pump connected to a sprayerbar.the spraybar is inside a 3" clear tube wraped in blanket stuffing and activated carbon and then Tye wrapped to the spraybar.two 3" rubber end caps seal this make a good filter and pumps 400 gph

Same setup as lobsterman.I have my chest freezer plugged into the timer with a hang on filter and airaeters. If you don't have the filter running the water will get alot colder.I made small adjustments to my times until I got it stabil.

I have had this set up now for almost 1 week and I could not be happier  ;D. I reused some smelts 4 days in a row until they got consumed by Mr. Salmon. The water is crystal clear and I have not lost 1 bait. It will be interssting how it works at -0. ???

MDH let me know if you need some more of those topsecret brookie/brown candies.   I bet we could get you set up with your own topsecret spot to get some in a few years....
I would like to say thank you; to You MDH and Woodswise for hooking me up with some bait to fish for the cure.

Here's a question for everyone... in NY we need to have "certified" bait or the bait must come from the same water that you are fishing. How exactly will the DEC officer know if the bait you had actually came from that body of water if you trap your own?
We don't need to have "certified" bait.

Most of our bait come from small farm ponds or beaver ponds or bog ponds.

It doesn't matter the color!!  :-\  Just if you bought a black one make sure the rings aren't on the inside hole, sometimes they have them in there, also I HIGHLY recommend bread with your dog food!!

:icefish: If you are going for the bigger shinners/suckers/chubs i usually make the hole bigger so you get more bigger bait than smaller but it all depends what your trappin.

I trap with black and the silver ones.   They trap about the same i think,   I think it depends on wether or not there is bait in the area that you are trapping
