Clam Telescopic shovel.
« on: Dec 10, 2011, 06:56 PM »
I saw the Clam telescopic shovel in Farm and Fleet today. Looks cool but $18 for a shovel? Looks like it has an anodized aluminum scoop with 2 tubes that collapse into each other. But $18?

No doubt they are overpriced, but it sure is handy. I use mine almost every time out, or at least my seven year old does!

I haven't seen the clam one, but around $20 is normal for a small aluminum collapsable shovel.  In the past I've seen similar hiker's shovel sold for as high as $40.

I picked this one up a few weeks ago. Fairly heavy duty and weighs less than 2#. Plus the handle can be removed from the shovel for further break down. Well worth the 10 bucks IMO.

Cheap compared to the $60 one I have. Mine is a HMK outback shovel, has compass, saw in handle.  Got it a few years before the collapsable shovels hit the ice fishing stores.

Clam sells overpriced junk.  They've a step above HT.  They USED to have nice things though.

does anybody know what the clam shovel weighs?

They list it at 1.2 lbs.  I had one in my hand yesterday, it felt heavier than that?  Looked durable...

Check the automotive section at Wally Mart. I've seen collapsable shovels for keeping in vehicles. Didn't check price, sorry!! :icefish:

Clam sells overpriced junk.  They've a step above HT.  They USED to have nice things though.

I have had an HT one-man flip-over shelter for over 6 years and still in good shape. The tent material was thicker compared to the Frabill nylon material. Back then all I heard about was Frabill, Frabill, Frabill.

I also own a HT AE-7 hand auger. It's been a good auger until the weld broke on the flutes while using it on my IceGator. I had them re-welded ready to go this year.

Seems like the only difference between HT and Clam is that Clam get promoted more and they have more stuff.

HT does make some good stuff.

I used to use the plastic emergency snow shovel.  For ice fishing, they're no good.  They'll break on you if you're shoveling slush that's frozen afterwards.  Go with the aluminum shovel, it's actually useful.

I have used the cheap plastic shovels in the past.  I picked up a Clam shovel early last year and have been super impressed with the quality.  Its basically a mt climbing shovel.  I picked up 2 more to keep in the trucks.  I don't mind spending a little more for durability and quality/fit.
