Am I defeating the purpose of deadsticking?
« on: Dec 08, 2011, 01:05 PM »
So here in ON we can put two lines in and when I am with an operator and not using tip ups I put another line in the water.

Occasionally, once every fifteen minutes I jig that line a bit and then back onto my jigging line.....

Am I hurting my chances?

More info needed...but I'm assuming your using a minnow? But I do not think you are hurting your chances because if you are waiting 15 between "jiggles" then you aren't gonna catch any less fish than you already are

I always do that it gets the bait to swim around.
I find they tend to go to sleep after a while.

I vote no...what's  the harm? Sometimes all it takes is a jiggle once in awhile, especially when they're in the negative mode...a little attention getter I say.

I hook my minnows behind the dorsal fin in up in the water column for Crappie and brook trout. I hook then thru the lips on a small lead head jig and pin them to the bottom for Lakers and Walleyes, the minnow struggling attracts fish for me. My dead stick rod tips are soft enough to see the bait moving, I usually let them do there own thing and let it set there.

i say no a little jig seems to wake the minnow up,besides give you a chance to check your line to make sure its not frozen into the ice

i rarely touch my second line, im usually jigging my one line close to the deadstick, if the fish are not aggressive the jig still brings them in, and then they hit the deadstick. for me there is no reason to touch the deadstick unless checking on the bait

its fine to keep doing what your doing. I do the same thing except I will jig one hole for a while then go to the other rod and jig that one and leave the other one as a deadstick.
