Ice auger cutting ice question...
« on: Dec 06, 2011, 10:24 AM »
I'm not looking for an argument just a simple this is what I think is wrong.....

I have a "New" (it is actually several years old but has not ever been used) StrikeMaster 3.0.  I bought it new from my companies employee store.  It was returned because it wouldn't run.  Well the gas line was routed wrong and pinched.  Anyway, this thing runs fine but it WILL NOT CUT ICE.  It just spins, and spins, and spins, no matter how hard you push down.  That's the reason I have never used it.....always use my $40.00 Jiffy 3.0 find.

I'm wondering if it could be the blades and the power point ?  I have never bought new ones.... To lazy I guess.

Your thoughts?

Sounds like there's something wrong with the point. Can you take a picture of the point and blade and post? I doubt it's the blades unless there isn't one mounted. Sounds like the power point is either extremely dull, or could even be mounted wrong. If some one dropped it on put a lot of pressure on the point it may not be cutting.

I'm a true Jiffy auger person and only bought this Strikemaster as a spare.  I know this is a dumb question but, does the point not being sharp make that much of a difference?  I have taken the cutting blades off and removed the point thinking they were in backwards/upside down but they were not.

I'll order some new power points and blades to boot.  This thing is brand new worse case it I buy a whole new auger bit and start fresh that way........

Could be whoever had it before slammed it around when it didnt run, and bent the blade.

this actually has some logic behind it. a fella i know who has his shack on the same body of water mine is alway on puta eskimo 10" auger on a jiffy powerhead. when he went to show me last year how this "bad mama jama" cuts when we were putting his shack out he found it spinning in the wrong direction hahaha i aboput pissed in my pants laughing at him. make sure it is rotating into the cut, not away from it.

I have an old model 30 that has always been taken care of. 2-3 years ago I noticed the point was a little nicked up. I touched up the edges with a file and it made a huge difference. If you try to repair the tip/blade yourself you have to be very careful to keep the same pitch and a flat edge. If the point won't cut into the ice the blades never make contact to cut, so it does make a very big difference.

Try new blades. I had that problem with my auger my first trip out. Almost burned out the motor trying to drill 1 hole. I switched to new blades and it cut fine.

I dunno about it being in reverse, but yes, check the point. If that angle is not correct due to damage or wearing it won't grab the ice. Same with the blade.

Is that what my problem could be?  I'm using the wrong hand?  I hate being 'French'!!!  LOL!!!!  I'm convinced it's the blades and the power point....

Sharpen the point, and drink a beer.. Seriously. If you cut an aluminum can, place the "shim" sized to the blade to get the correct angle, and screw er back in, there is no reason it wont work like new. Might have gotten banged up a bit in the back roo

 IC,
I have the same auger you have from the same store, I've found that this auger really needs sharp blades and the pick. Just up the street from me, Prospect St Topsham there's a saw sharpening place. He does a great job. I have him touch up my blades each year. Good luck,

LIKE EVERY ONE SAID. THE POINT IS MOST LIKELY THE PROBLEM. EVEN DULL BLADES CUT , BUT NOT IF THEY DONT MAKE IT TO THE ICE.

That's really how it acts.  I have checked that many times.  I'm just going to order new blades and give that a try.

doesn't take much to ruin the chipper blades... one run into the bottom of the lake and your looking for new blades.
replace the blades and it will cut like butter.
