Wondering how many guys plan on hitting the Bay for whitefish this winter? If you've never done it, I can tell you it is a riot when you get on them.

I will go out once or twice this year when I get sick of walleye on winnebago and poygan... I am not a big fan of it as its like shooting fish in a barrel. It seems to take zero skill or knowledge to catch these fish. I like to catch fish that are alittle more challenging. Its fun for about 20 mins than I get sick of it. Diff folks diff strokes I guess :) good luck guys be safe out there.

I have never fished the bay, but it is on my wish / to do list.  Whitefish sounds like a blast.  I am hoping that I can get some buddies together to take a trip to the bay this year.

Same here, never been up on the bay for ice fishing.  Think I've almost got a co-worker/fishing buddy talked into head up with me this year.  :D

I am ready for whities on the bay (little sturgeon, riley & sand bay). I went out about 5 times last year got my limit by noon everytime. I got my buddies hooked last year, they wanted to go every weekend. My wife's family is from up that way so we usually head out with some of them.

I fish the bay two or three times a week, because it's five minutes from my home. ;D

Sounds like fun.  From Oshkosh what would be a place to start?

It was on my bucket list for last year and due to a family illness I barely got out at all. I'm gonna take another swing this season...

Spoons? Size and style - any recommendations?

Bennettc -  I would start out in either Little Sturgeon, Rileys Bay or Sand Bay.

esox_xtm - I usually use 1/5 or 1/4 oz gold swedish pimples with waxies with a slider hook above the swivel.

I'll be out there alot this year. Make sure if your not familar with the area and your not going out with a guide to stop buy a local bait/gas station for info on where to go and where to stay away from. There was more than enough guys putting their rides through the ice last season.

The owner is a guide and also has ice shack rentals if that's what your lookin for. I have never been inside the resort, i assume its nice. If your just looking for a place to eat and sleep wave pointe marina has really place and winter rates are very reasonable and restaurant and bar on site.

I would highly recommend the Sand Bay Beach Resort.  We stayed for two nights last winter and rented one of their ice houses.  The hotel was nice enough that the rest of the family played in the pool and had fun while we fished.  The fishing was great, and since I didn't have a way to get the mile + out to the fishing, we paid the little bit extra to have them drive us out.  We are seriously considering doing the same thing again this winter.

Silly question, as I'm sure everyone needs another rod/reel, but what's the recommended weight for whitefish?  I need a new Medium, think that's too much?  :D

I know that alot of the guides up there use the Frabill Bro Series 28" medium and 28" Deadstick combos. They also use the Frabill Ice Hunter 38" Medium combo for outside fishing and in the bigger permanent shacks. I would suggest the 28" medium especially if you are in the deeper water out there. I personally use the Frabill Ice Hunter 26" medium for whities.

On another note Roger at the Stevenson Point Citgo is a big help on ice conditions and where the fish are biting. I usually stop there on the way out to get some snacks and info. They have a pretty good selection of ice fishing gear and a huge selection of swedish pimples.

Wipike - That would probably work, we use the cheap ice blues by HT, or the hot sticks by frabill. These are both fiberglass light and ultralight rods. The whitefish have really soft mouths and it is easy to loose them on the way up, they go nuts when they get about 5 or 6 feet from the ice and can tear off your hook easy. We used to use M or ML but since switching to the ice blues in 24 and 30 inch we rarely loose any. If your lucky enough to hook them in the "beak" (the upper jaw) they do not come off no matter what rod you are using or how bad you horse them. If your using a heavier rod you may have a hard time telling when they bite, some days they barely suck in a waxie and they can spit it fast, other days they hit it hard and you'll know they are on if you are using a broom handle.

no offense taken. Just letting the newbies know that it is a good place to start if they have never been up there fishing.

that is a pretty good line though.
