Anyone make their own Spring Bobbers?
« on: Oct 25, 2011, 01:18 PM »
I was wondering if anyone has and what they used. I have some Wire for an Electric fence that will bend into a eyelet pretty easy and I thought maybe just wrapping the shaft with Electric tape. Homer,Hillbilly style.

Here is a quick one I made in 1 Minute.

I think I saw some threads on here about making spring bobbers with springs or wire, one guy was using guitar strings. another one used one of those plastic wire ties. I think you could do a search and find them.

Ya know I looked at some of the better made ones on the market and will most likely just buy more if I need them. I did try a bead over mine and it looks pretty good.

I have made some in the past from ink pen springs, and then glue a bright orange bead on the end.  But, there are so many great models on the market, kinda seems useless.

spring bobbers are fairly cheap, i buy over making my own. The Frabill ones you get 3 or 4 for under 10$. The St Croix one is about $6 or $7 a piece. both are a quality product. No use messing around

Yea I was bored today and thought about them and remembered i had that roll of wire sitting in the shed. Looks a lot better with a red bead on it. I might put one on my laker rod just for those finicky lakers.

I make them outta my bass guitar strings, works great, and since I change strings alot I always have plenty on hand. Takes me about 30 seconds to make one with a bead at the end.Haven't bought a Bobber in years.

St. Croix has raised the price of their springs to $9 this year!  I'm a fan now of the Marmish or Your Bobbers Down european style springs.  Originally made for palm rods, but they adapt really well to American style rods.    For $4 or so apiece, I can't see trying to make my own...

I have made one out of the spring of a Bic lighter. Still working on a bead to glue to the end . It is just neat to make something that you use.  I make all my poles . I have a neighbor make the handles ,he turns down for me. I buy broken rod tips at Cabelas for a couple of bucks,I love to get a flyrod end ,works great. I have had guys use my  made up rods and they think that they are great. But some day I would love to own a St.Croy ice rod just to say I have one.    Jerry

use electric guitar strings
Fishing is a sport in which thinking is involved it is the covenant between nature and man, mother and son. Through fishing only can we recreate the link that has been tarnished throughout the existence of the modern era of mankind. Fishing is the answer yet people ignore it and consider it a "stupid" thing to do. What do these people do instead? They stare in front of color changing boxes. Is that life? My life is fishin

I used to use the spring out of a disposable Bic Lighter, the larger ones.
Lightly stretch it out so the coils are separated.
Paint any color and apply with heat shrink tubing.

I now use the St Croix model.

I've made them out of Guitar strings.  I think they have better action than any I can buy locally.  The wire is light but still springy, plus after I catch a fish the wire goes back to its original form.  Some store ones need straightened after a fish.  Coil spring bobbers are nice, however, I don't have a shack.   Freeze up is a bugger with the coils.

I made some out of wire leaders. I took off the hardware ( swivels and rings) and cut one side down to length. I then bent the crimp to 90' and painted it with glow orange paint. I'll post a pic later. The 5 pack of leaders was 4 bucks I think.
I love my job, it pays for my bait.

I just bought a few of the cheap flat steel spring bobbers and it got my mind thinking. I had a few old used guitar and bass strings laying around and thought I'd give it a try. Not to mention you can make the eye as big as you like and they are adjustable depending on how you attach them! I can't wait to try em out!!!!

I've never made any but I like the St. Croix spring bobbers but not the price. ($10 each)

I searched and found these:

They are only $2.49 for a pair. Anyone tried them?

You can get them here:

An acoustic ''E'' String is .012 an electric is .010 (guitar strings) they cost arround a buck. You can make 10 spring bobbers per string, it has been a long time since school but it's a dime a bobber.  Cut 3'' pieces of wire, bend into a ''z'' 1/4'' x1/4'' x 2 1/2'' mount on your rod however you choose, I use 1/8'' bamboo, mount to the top of rod , tape, , glue , drape line over the open leg of bobber. I think this is what I like best about this type of bobber , you don't have to thread the line through it. You don't have as much freezing. The wire is rigid enough that you can hear the line come off of it when you yank fish. When you don't use it it's out of the way. If I were a little handier, I would send a picture. Hope this helps some one, same as most on here if you see something that might work, try it then tweek it. I would rather use something I made over something I bought.

I got a couple packs of those when I was down at HT a couple weeks ago. They look real sensitive but they are VERY light. Too heavy of a jig and your bobber will be pointed at the hole. I really do like the Marmooska style ones a bit better. They are a little more stout for a bit heavier jig but plenty bend for light biters. Made by the same folks, same price I think
