Need some help with boot selection
« on: Oct 24, 2011, 06:10 PM »
So I just "broke" my last pair of boots hunting.... im looking around for a boot that is camo so i can use it hunting, insulated for the colder weather, and waterproof so I can stand in 6 to 10 inches of slush on them warmer ice fishing days.....  one reservation about Muck boots, they're neoprene right???  so if there's a small pin prick they're gonna leak and i would assume its easier to penetrate them over the rubber boots im using now.  but with the rubber boots, im noticing some dry rot and cracking on the "seam" on the top of my foot so its not gonna be too long before them buggers start leaking..... anything under $160 would be great

Cabelas online just had a huge sales on boots. I purchased a 1200 gram pair of duratrak boots camo realtree for $79. Cost nothing to ship to the Scarborough store. Regular price was $159

I got the lacrosse ones and they're great. Feet are never cold ice fishing or shoveling or whatever. can walk in water almost to my knees. Hell, I use em fishing. Walk into the water to get past weeds while fishing.

Anything with more than 200 gram insulation and my feet sweat.  That makes them wet,  then cold.  200 gram or uninsulated and mt feet stay dry and comfortable.  waterproof and breathable is important.  Gore-Tex is best.  None of the proprietary imitations seem to be as good.

Try wearing just one pair of white athletic socks. No wool, no heavy socks or mutiple layers of socks, it makes a huge difference.

I don't wear any special socks. Just throw on a regular pair of socks and not a worry in the world for the whole time I'm in them.

I'm buying a pair of muck arctic pros my read heads didn't last 1 season
Muck's have the least amount of seams I have seen on a rubber boot and that is where they all fail.

x3 on the just regular socks. Plus I don't tie my boots tight I have them so they can come on and off without untying. This has made a huge difference for me personally plus it's so much easier to get them off after a long day of walking all over the lake.

well, ive done my research, and checked every review.  I've decided to go with a pair of cabelas boots.  They're pretty much a Much boot dipped in rubber.  I have been wearing them non stop for the past 5 days, at work, at home, in town, hunting....  they're half the weight as my other rubber boots, stiffer frame, and are rugged as all hell.. as of right now i am very pleased with my purchase... but its only been 5 days, ask me again in a few months and ill let you know... here they are....

1200 grams of thinsulate and best of all they were on sale -- $80 bucks... waaayyyy cheaper than all the other brands i've come across

Just spent 2 solid weeks in a pair of Mucks (8-10 hours a day).  I fixed the quote for you. ;)

Maybe I bought a bad pair but in my opinion.......

Hunting:  Soles and boot foot are too hard and very noisy.  I can live with this but  cannot "feel" what is under my feet.  Soles are very slippery in mud, frost, and on wet ground.  Mine are not as waterproof as the LaCrosse I had.  This is a personal point but mine don't fit me well (I wear a size 10 boot and tried several different sizes) and I find them uncomforatble.

Icefishing:  Slippery.  My feet never get cold, except when I wear Muck Arctic Sports.  I have tried light socks, medium socks, and can't wear heavy socks as the boot is too tight.

Been ice fishing my whole life. I use LL Bean PAC BOOTS. Warmest, waterproof boots I have ever owned. I dont own an ice shack, and the cold weather never keeps me home.
,we call them junk fish!
