Yup!  Christmas sounds right to me.  I know I'll be shallow, that's for sure.

I can't wait!

It's been New Year's for us the past few years.  Where are you fishing X-mas or earlier?

The WORST day of fishing is ALWAYS better than the BEST day in the office.

depends what you call safe ice.....some people consider safe 6+ inches, other like myself will go out at 3 1/2-4 inches of black ice.   as long as there's a spud in the lead mans hands, you can find safe ice early.

The small shallow protected ponds always ice up first. The big lakes are always last and need that magic 10 degree dead still night. It's early to be on this site with 2 - 2.5 months to go.
I can understand the fever, but there's lots to keep you busy till the hard water starts. The eyes are starting and the rest of the slimy devils are putting on the feed-bag for winter.

IDK  if you look at the 15 day for any northern areas it is showing 50s and 60s not 30s as day highs. I know they said it will start earlier this season and stay cold, however when that is going to happen is anyones guess. I would think New Years at least for me. With this snow, I think it is getting a jumpstart to lowering the water temps and turning over the water thermalclines quicker.

This snow was a fluke. Temps will return back to usually and possibly even warmer. However i think small ponds will be good by mid december like last year.

Leaves are still falling in Sussex county. Some mornings are colder than 32, but not the afternoons. There has been skim ice on puddles, but thats a long way from walkable ice. Six or more weeks of waiting and planing, stay tuned...    :tip up:      :tip up:      :tip up:

Read an article not to ong ago about the wolf preserve here in NJ and they said they have had their thick coats earlier than normal which means it will be a cold one..They said they are NEVER wrong!!

Last year was out before BDay 12/19...would take that again in a heartbeat

this weather is unreal....ice cold and then im sweating the next day. all the trees by my house finally dropped all the leaves, so there is still hope for December outings, just not as early as i would have liked.

That's wishful thinking. You remember we were on the pond last year on the 18th of Dec. but that was almost a week earlier than the year before (on the 24th). The pond was locked up on DEc 16th with about 4" of ice. That'll be real hard to beat this year. I'm predicting about Christmas time but this weather pattern is weird this year. Last Dec. turned cold and windy early (like Dec. 2) and remained that way for the whole month. Cold & windy helped keep the wind chill factor down a few degrees.

Check out the history for last December on the weather underground link I'm posting. The weather station is Caldwell, NJ. Wildcat Ridge in Rockaway is one of the colder spots in all of Morris County so keep that in mind as you interpret. Look carefully at the graphs. The date is on the bottom of each graph. The temps got down to about 15 on the 10th but mostly hovered between 25ish-40 so the wind chill at night helped greatly. Look also at the wind graph (3rd one down) to see that influence. Of particular note is the 12th -18th or so. Then again the 20th-30th.

Here's another link from 2009, note again that the temps were not particularly cold but the wind chill factor the whole month had a significant impact. I fished on Xmas eve day at the pond in '09. The 14th right thru to the end of the month was windy. Dec. '09 was actually a bit warmer than '10 on the average but the wind helped to lock up the ice at night.

Lastly, here's a comparison of last November to this November. The wind pattern is comparable but the average temp this November is about 5 degrees warmer than last year. Not a good start for the ice to form and the water to chill.
