Tips for pulling up jack. Newbie looking for tips.
« on: Mar 22, 2011, 09:50 AM »
Hey! I started ice fishing this winter, and I love it.  I started by looking for perch, but kept getting jack instead, so I switched to them. I get them with some regularity, but they're usually still pretty small.

Does anyone have advice for getting bigger jack, and more of them? Looking for any tips and tricks I can get. So far I've had the most luck jigging over deep water around dusk, but what do I know.

A general rule of thumb for pike, summer or winter, is bigger bait for bigger fish. Most guys run baits as big as 12-14" on quick strike rigs on tip-ups for the bigger fish. The bigger fish seem to like easier access to the deep water, so by fishing where you are, then you've already got that part covered. The big ones can be found in the same areas as the little guys, so if you're catching pike already, just keep at it and eventually you'll get some bigger ones. Good Luck!
A bad day of fishing beats anything else I'd be doing today.....
