We haven't been out there this year, but we hit it towards the end of last year, and we never even got a bite!  I hear alot of people have good luck out there, but we apparently didn't hit it on the right day  >:(

Yeah that place is unpredictable. Sometimes there's trout and salmon in there thick. We get 'em with big bait & tip-ups just down 6 feet or so, or jigging too. Other days there's perch in there. Always had our best luck out quite a ways though, fishing over 15-20 feet.

There was a great bite with big perch about a week and a half ago. It lasted 3 days. The fish were way out in 40'+ of water near Stave island. The ice was premo all the way out. Can't wait for the fish to move in on the beach.

champlain islander:  how thick was the ice? do you have to get out near where the open water is, or just to the drop?

The trout tend to keep the perch on the move, so they don't stay put out there for very long ever, until spring when they are beginning to spawn in close. For those who don't know where it is, it's off West Shore Rd between the orchards in S. Hero and the Grand Isle Ferry, east of The Narrows.

The ice was around 1 1/2 feet thick and we were out about 1/2 mile from the Island quite a ways past the drop off and no where near the open water. The bay is huge and the fish could be anywhere. We probably drove wheelers right past the schools going out after the bite ended. You never know where they will be until someone cuts a hole and hits paydirt.
