Smelt

What is the best thing to do with smelt after you caught them? I have never caught smelt before so I would think to use them as bait and at best keep them alive.  Or is it better to use them dead or eat them? You probably eat them somewhat whole but I would think their bones would make eating the whole fish unpalatable.

smelt are great eating! the bones do cook up so that you can eat them. as far as bait is concerned, live is the way to go but on a good day dead ones will work. when i jig i use tail fillets for scent and flash. works well for me

All of the above!  ;D

Fry them up with french fries.  Goes good with Sam Adams.

Cut one up and send it to the bottom under a tip up.  Put on a nice frisky one live just under the ice.  All good fishing.

I've eaten some side filets raw like sushi and eaten the roe out of a female just to be hardcore.  And because I think that is probably a delicacy in Japan.

After trout and salmon my favorite creatures on earth.  Oh and women.
Farewell and adieu, to you fair spanish ladies. Farewell and adieu, you ladies of Spain. For we've just received orders, for to sail back to Boston. And so nevermore, shall we see you again.

There is alot you can do with those fish.  I gotta try my luck fishin for them sometime.  I went to lake carmi and try out my light at night but nothing hopefully waterburry will give me better luck with my underwater light.  The best idea I had was to go to waterburry for the whole day catch some smelt in the a.m. and then try out using them for bait in the afternoon.
