For someone that doesn't know what to do with a bucktail, I would put a smelt on it and jig it. I'm sure you don't know how to fillet a sucker.
Buy a bucket of smelt and put one on the jig. Either hook the smelt in it's side (laying on it's side) and up into it's head. Have the tip of the hook buried in it's head (bone area) so when you jig, the smelt has a nice fluttering action in the tail section. Or hook the smelt in the belly and then up into the head (brain area / bone). I like the point of the hook to be in the head as that's how they take it most of the time and because it is a bone area to lodge the hook into.
Using a sucker is messy. You need to descale and fillet the sucker. I cut the pieces into "frogs" with tails, like uncle josh pork pieces they use for bass. Push the hook into the skin (frogs arse area) then then into the head area of the frog where the hook is hidden in the meat area. The skin is tough so the meat will stay on the hook.
Either method, pound bottom, then stop, lift and repeat.
Good luck,
JIGGIN.
