not taking bait under
« on: Jan 30, 2011, 09:13 PM »
so im pretty new to ice fishing and am kinda learning on my own. And lately ive switched from waxies to crappie minnows. im getting a ton of nibbles but the fish refuse to actually take the whole minnow. Im not sure what im doing wrong, ive tried hooking them through the the lip and the back. Does anyone have any tips for me.

Never had much luck with crappie minnows unless the fish were real aggressive.

Are you dead sticking, spring bobber our a cork???? If you are using a cork make sure that it isn't to big.It should just float enough to hold up the minnow, sinker our jig.The crappies don't like to feel any resistance when they take a bait.

I'm using a very small slip bobber it is just big enough to hold my minnow And my small jig.

Next time you go drop the jig and go for a small hook and split shot.  Keep the shot at least 6 inches away from the minnow.  If the minnows are small a #8 long shank hook will be big enough if the minnows are larger go with  #6.

Be careful of whats on your hands. Use a fish attractant of some sort to mask any foreign sents.

Could just be the minnow getting active and pulling on the bobber. If they are fish and they're not taking the bobber down well try a smaller bobber that offers less resistance.
