You guys have snow on the ice? Thats kinda rare here. We get alot of wind and our snow usually wears out and blows over to North Dakota.....  SOunds like a good idea though, that also must be why the easterners like the taller tipups?

A shovel would have come in handy this weekend.  Using my boot to kick the snow and slop away from the holes does get old fast. ::)

If the snow is relatively deep, I bring a shovel.  Otherwise, I just drill right through.

Must be nobody from So. Vermont has replied yet...if you shoveled your hole here the last 3 weekends you would find yourself standing in 8" of water/slush. Leave the shovel at home...no good here until we do something with the snow!!!!

wallyworld has a small collapsable handled shovel that works great. I drill holes til i find fish then drill 4 holes for inside the shack and clear it all away and setup  it is alot more "organized" feeling not dealing with all of the "extra" snow/slush inside
-Truckin , Huntin , and Fishin , That's how I roll

Ha Haa Haaa  Did that hurt right away ???

With the slop that is under the snow you are better off leaving it where it lies. I drill through and thern do the fish dance around the hole to compact it and make a mash that is a little bit more stable.

i just bungy strap a regular snow shovel onto my sled, I drill through all the crap first make my hole then clear it all out with the shovel. How far down to the ice you flatten it does depend on if or how much standing water you have on the ice under the snow. If there is standing water I don't go all the way down.

If you can leave the snow there and stay on top you are better off.  Sometimes the snow is so heavy it pushes the ice down and water comes up through the holes.  If you shovel all the snow away you have a puddle to walk through.  If you can pack the snow so its hard and then drill through you can stay drier.

Like Drifter, I alway carry a collapsable shovel with me to clear the snow and ice from around my hole. Get an aluminium collapsable shovel that back country skiers use. They are light and durable.

I always take a small snow shovel, a kid size, and clear away my holes, we usually don't get too much snow on the ice, like the guy from montana, the wind usually blows it east, toward montana ;D
