Fillet A Northern Pike w/o Bones - Video
« on: Jan 19, 2011, 06:38 PM »
Here is a quick video I found last year that explains a new way to fillet a northern pike without any bones.  Just thought some might like.

I've watched alot of videos on filleting a pike and this one is my favorite.  Gives a good closeup of the whole operation.  Check it out.

Wow....looks so simple! I just filleted two pike up 2 days ago and it looked like I sent them through a grinder after I was done with them trying to get the bones out. That first vid just made things look so simple! THANKS! Can't wait to spear or catch another and try it out!
You may call me crazy, but crazy catches fish!

The first video is similar to how I fillet my pike.  I learned to start on top fillet from a Canadian fishing up at White River.  Works well.

Sure isn't much meat on a 24-26" fish after all the bones are gone. Sure is a great way to clean them though.

I know what you mean by not having much meat left.  I have cleaned a few trying to remove the bones, and there seems to be some waste.  But I have to tell you, you still end up with more than you think.  Personally, I don't mind the bones, and can pick through them while eating.  But having 2 young boys that like to eat fish, its nice to be able to clean one of the best eating fish out there without having to worry about them swallowing a Y-bone.

Here's another video that's pretty good.

I added this second video for walleyes.  Same guy, but he does a nice job of showing how to get the cheek meat and a small tidbit about walleye wings.
