Crystal Reservoir
« on: Jan 17, 2011, 07:48 PM »
We went out to Crystal Reservoir by Cheyenne today and did very well despite the raging wind! The wind was almost unbearable but we managed to catch 19 rainbows from 11" to 19". We caught them all on 1/4 and 3/8 oz nickel PK flutter fish. It was fun but that wind was tough to take for that 3 hour window. BRRRRR!!!!

They're the new sponsor of this board. If you scroll up you'll see an orange banner that says "PK. CATCHING FISH REDEFINED". Click that sucker and you'll see what a PK flutterfish is.

Sounds like a good day spoonjigger. Did you have the flutterfish tipped with anything or just the spoon???

I just used the spoon. I put my back to the wind and just held on. There were times I just leaned into the wind and it almost held me up. Because we were catching fish and the wind was so bad, we stuck with what we had on. I always start with the flutter fish and then move on from there. I guess you just stick to a proven lure. I used to use the rapala jigging rap all the time but have been converted over the last few years to the PK products. They work really well and they are a Wyoming product. Can't beat that I guess.

The day would have been perfect if it hadn't been for that wind. Wow it was strong.

So how was the top of the ice holding up?  This warm wind is causing a lot of pooling water on the ice around here.  I guess Saratoga has an inch of water on it today with no snow.  Shocking since there was a lot of snow on it yesterday.

How deep and where were the fish in the water column?

Can we get those PK lures some place other than online?

When I have been fishing up there most of the trout seemed to be between 10'-15'.  Didn't really matter how deep the water was there.  Some trout where on the bottom however.  You can get the PK spoons at some stores.  I picked some up in Riverton.  Pretty hit and miss however.

When I was little my grampa taught me how to jig a Thomas Cyclone for trout and that's all I've used since then.  I wonder how the action is compared to the this PK flutter fish and how about the price.

I was fishing in 15' to 8' of water most of the day. The wind was not that warm to me but it was affecting the ice. The area that we fished had about 12" of ice on it.

As far as where to buy the lures, I think they have some in Cheyenne but I get mine online. It is the fastest and best way because they seem to always have things in stock. I travel and fish all around the state and it is nice to be able to order them if I need to.
