They don't have the amount of the fine in the regs book, but taking a fish out of season is $25, so I am guessing that a bait fine is probably $25-$100 I bet.

When did felt soled boots become illegal?  Now when I go river fishing I have to use rubber soled boots and risk slipping into the river and die!  Thanks F&W.

You think a colorful regs book is going to get more people to fish and hunt here F&W?  The biggest joke about the new book is on page 31 where there is a warning not to use deer urine.  Turn the page and.........advertisem ent for deer urine.  Are you kidding me?  Blatant tax payer FAIL!

If I understand correctly if the bait is not taken from the lake you can keep it.  I am going to build some bait containers that will fit down an 8 inch augr hole.   Check  the law for sure buts thats how I read it.  Its not worth losing my license for a year to try and bring it off the ice.

thats what i did. let it freeze in and drill a hole right next to it and pull it up the hole with a long hook. it works great

I have heard of people just drilling a live well right on the ice and throwing their bait in it so they can use it the next day. I plan on fishing for pike suring the Champlain Islands Derby so I'm thinking I will just fish close to shore and leave a bigger cooler with my bait in it right on shore.  I'll use a small bait bucket to bait my tips and reload as needed.  This way I can take what I don't use home with me to use the next day.  I've never done this before but the way I'm reading the regs I think this is legal.

I have talked to wardens from one end of the state to the other and NONE of them have asked to see any bait slips.  I asked one of them if they wanted to see my slip and they told me they really didn't care where I got my bait or if I had a slip.  I thought that was funny, and maybe they see our side of this.

So the regs read that if you bring bait on the ice you are not to take it off........ so if you have a bubbler at home or where ever just take what you need for the day.... I have a 4" PVC tube that is threaded for a cap on both ends with very small holes drilled in it..... Put all your bait in that and since it in your shanty or tie it to a tree on shore.... especially if your going to fish a derby!...... By the Way Dunmore was Awesome today....had a 14lb pike on the ice, and a bunch of perch!!!!
Fishin Ain't easy but it's better than work

That slip is a transportation. receipt. Once your on the ice you dont need it. The only time they can ask for it is if your not on the ice. So dont get caught with your bait going to the ice or coming off of it and your all set ;)

Just as long as you go back to where your slip is made out for can't change lakes

The wader ban didn't come from F&W.

We got caught using bait we had caught somewhere else within the state and the warden made a point to make an example out of us and tagged us with a 275 dollar fine.  We were well aware of the new bait regulations we just thought we were invincible.  After moaning about it we all came to the conclusion that we really do have a beautiful place here in Vermont that is Right in our back yard.  The Rules are not only for the state but for all of us to protect our pristine fisheries.  Lesson learned.

I fish at least 3 days a week and have never been asked for a bait slip.  I have never heard of anyone else being asked around here either.  Must be we all look very honest ;D

how did they know you caught the bait somewhere else? Why wouldn't you say you caught it there?

We wasted $30 in shiners yesterday, yeah, slow day but still, would have been nice to be able to bring them home and keep them alive for the upcoming weekend.

If I read the regs right, couldn't you buy a couple dozen and split them up into two bait buckets.  Leave one in your vehicle and take one onto the lake with you.  That way you could still use the ones in your vehicle until the date runs out since you did not take them onto the ice.  I rarely fish Vermont, but that is my take on a BS situation.

you can but if you fish on sunday you cant save them because the time limit runs out!! unless you have a perm shanty on the ice and like someone said drill a hole and keep them there. it sucks because i like to fish all over and i have a eskimo pop up. plus with this snow i'd loose the hole as soon as i move the pop up. :(
