Your Tip-Up Perspective
« on: Jan 07, 2011, 06:48 PM »
So your out on the ice, several trips into the year and the fifth flag goes up in two hours.  Through the hole comes up another 20" hammer handle, what do you do:

1) Keep fishing in the same spots on the lake, waiting for a nice fish to come through, even though it might be 67 flags from now,
2) Pick different spots on the lake to try,
3) Pick a new lake.

Your thoughts?

Personally I would give it 5 more flags but then after that I would be at a new spot definantly.  Got to be searchin for the big ones!

It all depends on they type of water you are fishing.  On the lake I fish the most, I seem to catch my larger pike during Jan. and Feb. in deeper water (18 to 35 feet).  I once saw a 20 pounder taken on a tip-up when fishing for perch over a 60 foot hole.  If you are catching small ones consistently in the same locations all the time, I would try to move just a bite and see what comes of it.

Usually I will move strait out to deeper water from where the small pike are.  20 to 40ft of water and fish about 6ft off bottom.  The bigger pike seem to be deeper when the hammer handles are feeding in shallow.

Tomorrow I will move to the 35' hole in the lake.  Never ice fished there.  Thanks for your vote!

Start keeping the small ones, sounds like overpopulation!

I am using dead smelt w/ good success already (except today).  This morning I walked .80 miles to the 'deep spot' in the lake.
8 flags, 6 pike, a 16" large mouth.  All pike not legal....PLUS, one of them was 12".   Looked like a spearing decoy coming out of the hole.

But the bite was hot today.  Obviously I need to hit a new lake.

Keep moving around to different weed beds.  It sounds like your fishing a pretty big lake so the big pike are hanging around somewhere.

Thats what I'd do, simply go fish where everyone else is fishing.
