Circle hooks w/Traps?
« on: Dec 31, 2010, 09:40 PM »
How many trout get deep hooked when your fishing with bait and traps? Should I use circle hooks if I want to release most of the fish?

I've only caught one brook trout (in a spot that shouldn't have trout) on a minnow/trap and it swallowed the bait, so we kept it. Do most trout, swallow the bait?

I wont touch another circle hook as long as i live unless its mandatory! those things lose so many fish and dont really dont do any better for the fish! I actually think it would be worse on the fish on a gut hook and it snaps your line? what do you think?

So far, the trout I've caught on a circle hook (a few) were nicely lip hooked and released.

When I am fishin for keeps - small trebles, and I retrieve 'em when I clean 'em... ;D
Sometimes it's not about the fish, but about the fishin'

   My experience has been that small (#8 - #4) circle hooks don't work well for catch and release.
The hook gap isn't wide enough to readily catch in corner of the fishes jaw and if swallowed or hooked deep in the mouth a circle hook is a nightmare to get out.    Use light wire, bronze hooks , flatten the barb and be ready to cut the line if the fish has swallowed it.
I understand that treble hooks are illegal with live bait??

I've only caught one brook trout (in a spot that shouldn't have trout) on a minnow/trap and it swallowed the bait, so we kept it. Do most trout, swallow the bait?

I tried Matzuo circle hooks for several seasons, and they were OK, but they gave me a few problems. I still gut hooked trout, and the hook would often turn into the bait when the fish would strike.

I have since swapped over to Gamakatsu octopus hooks and couldn't be any happier with a hook !
95 % of the trout i catch now seem to hook themselves on the initial strike in the corner of their mouth, without needing to set the hook. therefore they don't swallow the hook.

   I agree with James.  The octopus hooks are super.  I like the red ones because I can see them when I lay them on the ice next to the hole.

Circle hooks limit catch and release mortality according to several studies, probably because of fishing with an active line and a fishing rod (less chance of deep ingestion of bait).  Using a circle hook on a static line on a tip-up, with the associated delayed hook set, will likely not result in less gut hooked fish.

That's good info, Supervisor. I think I'll use the trap with that Octo hook that Swampy gave me when I'm on a 2 line lake. I hate to wound non-keepers.

circles a great on cusk lines, where the fish only swims a short distance before the line comes tight. on tip-ups, unless your right on them, they are not as good, and, with the smaller size for trout, they are easily swallowed. trying a larger , thin wired circle on a tip-up may work, just have to get to flag quick and apply tension to line to get it slid into the corner of there mouth. i have been using circles on stripers and blues for 15 plus years and love them on the brine.
