I use one of the hard breakdown shotguns cases from gander. Protects my thorne bros. rods from getting damaged either in the truck or in the fish trap. Around 50.00, will hold 4 combo's.

Years ago my buddy & I took a couple trips to N  Minnesota (Winnie, Leech Lake).  I didn't want my ice poles to get broke on the long haul. So I came up with a cheap & easy solution for ice poles. It works great.

Took 4-5" or whatever it is PVC pipe & cut off at the length of my longest pole. Got the correct size caps. Glued the one cap on but I suppose you can have them both loose.  They'll stay on. Just don't put the cap on too tight. I do recommend drilling some holes so that air can escape in the caps.  This helps with taking the caps off.

The only downfall is that you have to take the reals off but it doesn't take too long to put them on. Each pipe can take 3-5 poles. I made 2 & have about 8 poles or so.

The Otter Rod Box is my favorite and it takes a good beating.

Have you ever used zip ties to hold the reels on?  If you get them long enough I believe one will work if you do a figure 8 around the reel & pole. Otherwise, one can use two if needed. They work real well.

Another vote for the Otter Rod Box.  Fantastic set up.  Rods DO NOT move inside it.  It is big, but works fantastic.  Great for off-season storage too.

These are the best thing I have found so far, $19.99@. Plano take down shotgun cases. The rods can't move and there is a crush proof support in the middle of the case.

that looks like a really good set up and for $20 it is hard to beat.  I think my Otter case sells for about $70 so $20 is a lot easier to swallow.  How are the latches on the Plano cases?

So far they seem OK. I keep my gear in the truck  where the plastic gets cold, and haven't had any issues, The latches seem very sturdy.

35" is the best you can get into the Plano cases.

do you have to loosen the reel handles to use the case or can you leave them tightened up

I loosen and fold the handles on the reels.

A little off topic here, but take a look at the new "Bro" reels by Frabill.  They have a button on the reel handle that you push and the handle folds.  Really handy feature.  I can't speak to their quality yet as I've only used mine a few times, but the push button fold handle is really convenient for transport.

A friend of mine works at gander mountain and met "Bro" when he came in to do a seminar and he actually gave my friend a combo with one of his reels on it and well I used it the other day and it was really a nice reel. Smooth operation and that folding handle was pretty handy when it came time to pack it up for the day.
