Stuck Pully issue - Help?
« on: Dec 20, 2004, 07:53 AM »
One time I could not pull the cord at all until I took a screwdriver and moved the (fly wheel pulley) thing about a half-inch. Then I was able to pull the cord again... Has this every happen to you? If so how often did this happen? I hope that never happens again. ???

I have never had this happen to me before on any other small engine equipment. I think I will contact Strike Master?

Just got off the phone with a Strike Master Tech and he stated that he never had this happen before....

He was very nice and said that if it's working fine it should be okay. He did say call back if I have problems going forward.

Now that you stated that... I wonder if the compression release valve failed in this one instance?  :'(

Mongo:

I used something very small and moved the pulley fin forward about a half inch or so. This was enough to free her up... I am suggesting that you send a e-mail in and give them a call on this issue. The more incident reports the better. Tell them that I placed a report on this as well. I hope this will refresh their memory.

I will need to test the new one as well.... I have used mine on the ice yet... Just a few test startups in the shed and that went OK but this has me a little concerned. At least their service is very good.

Mongo:
Who knows maybe it was something simple, it is nice if it is new that the factory said to bring it back to where it was purchased and they will replace it.

I have to agree with your statement...

I was down in the cellar getting ready to box up the auger, I took off the blade and put the motor on my work bench and took 2 thin screwdrivers and released the teeth on the gear / fly wheel what ever you want to call it and the cord came is now able to extend and retract. I started the auger up and she purrs like a kitten. Too bad the cellar is full of smoke but the auger runs.

The rest of the house hold is man's best friend and he wanted to go outside once the auger kicked over. I woke up this morning and the blue haze inside the house is now gone. Like I said happy days are here again the auger is running.

Mole,
I am not going to return the auger, I got her up and running a few times last night and I did not have the same issue. Here is to hoping that it was just a fluke and it does not happend again.

It sounds to me like you have the piston rings seizing on the cylinder wall. I know with the new small engines the ring clearance is way tighter than they used to be some as tight as .001 of a inch. this is done for better perfomance. Before you store your auger try takeing the spark plug out and putting about a teaspoon of oil into the cylinder. Then pull the recoil rope a few times this will spred the oil around the cylinder. In my oppinion if it is a brand nerw auger never run before mix the oil slightly heavier for break in it will cut down on friction and help seat the rings better. Do this for maybe 1 or 2 tanks of gas then go to the manufacturers specs for your mix. If they are running a tighter ring gap then running your fuel mix lean will only score the walls faster and destroy the motor. Just my .02$

cold_feet :

You may be on to something.... I will do as you suggested... That only makes good sense. I would like to say that for me it did not take any effort to move the fly wheel pulley thing-ee with Small car key... Thank goodness... I will add to the mix and see how it goes....
Thank You... I wonder if Strike Master Folks already know about this?
