How do you rate your gills?
« on: Dec 17, 2010, 09:28 AM »
Just curious as to what you call your catches...

< 5" = Bait
5-6" = Chips or Huffs (HUngry For Fish)
7-8" = Keepers or Eaters
9-10"= Slabs or Nice Ones
10-11" = Bulls or Flounders
> 11" = Hangers or Wallflowers

it depends... i would love to keep nothing but 8+ inchers but we all know this is veryy rare. I will norm keeo 7+"  and maybe a couple 6"  it really depends on the bite and what the avg for that day is... and also how much i want fish that night lol

This is pretty much me as well. When the wife starts chewin' my arse for some fish dinners I start keeping a few 6"ers. Same with perch. Normally don't keep anything under 8" - unless the wife starts at it again............then I keep a few 7.5"er's (never less than that though as they are too much of a PITA to cut)

Each time I go out I just keep my best 10 as long as they're bigger than 6 inches.  It is a good idea to do this in small ponds and pressured areas so you don't overfish it.

Kitty and I nab 2000 plus fillets in an average winter. So if all we took were ginormous breaders the population I smaller lake could become negatively impacted over the years. So we each harvest our first 25 fish over 7. This ensures a nice mix of age class. We do it all over again come spring the same way.

So this am then i caught 8 slabs, 13, 8-9 inchers so I will call them nice ones seeing you left that out and 4 eaters!

Anything under 8 goes back anything over gets ate. Some days if the bites good we up the keepers to nothing under 9.
