What oil do you use?
« on: Dec 16, 2010, 04:02 PM »
I have been using Husqvarna XP oil for a long time now. It is a low smoke formula. It's nice because it comes in bottles for 1 gallon of gas. Both of my Eskimo augers call for 50:1 mixture. As of today I have also added an additive that removes the Ethanol from the gas. Put it in both augers today and they ran great. I had to tune the carb on the 10" and it started on the first pull.
If fishing was work I'd never be sick!

I have used Opti2 in premium gas at their recommended ratio for probably 20 years on the recommendation of an old logger friend.

Stihl HP. I've been using it in my trimmer and blower for a few years, I've been very happy with it so why try anything else.

This isn't rocket surgery, but to help you make a better choice of lubricants for small engines, here is a link to some technical info.

I have always used just any old 2 cycle oil for my eskimo. Last year i bought some amsoil dominator. Appears to have been a mistake. Last season i started getting deposits coming up the fuel line and clogging up right before the carb where it comes out of the tank. This made drilling difficult since it kept bogging out from the restricted fuel. Today i go out in the garage to get the auger going. The primer bulb is completly shot. Fuel line is rock hard and shrunken. The auger is like 6 years old this  year. Ive never had a problem like this until running the amsoil. Looks like i should have gone with the Sabre oil instead of the dominator.

I really doubt you can blame that on the oil, more like the horrible ethanol gas finally cleaned the crud and loosened what was in your tank and fuel line and carried it towards the carb.  That's why I never leave fuel, straight or mixed in small engines for any long period of time.  Ethanol also tends to degrade some feul lines.

Yes Saber only for augers, the Dominator is an injection oil.

And, to all who run a rich mixture beyond 100/1 ~ clean out the residual once a year with

Amsoil PowerFoam. Dirrections are on the container.

Amsoil Saber at 80:1
x4. You really cant beat this stuff!!!! One season, one sparkplug. No smoke at all.

X5

After talking to the Amsoil rep at the St. Paul Ice show last year, this is now my oil of choice.
I use it in all of my two-stroke equipment.  Easy starting, no smoke, no problems.

Ice Auger, Leaf Blower, Chain Saw, weed trimmer, it's all good!!

Hope this helps,

Wiener

Your auger will run much better on a 70-100:1 Amsoil mix. You wont get that nasty black crud leaking all over everything.

i have had the auger for two years now and havent had any sign of that happening and it runs great.  do you think over time i will start seeing the black nasty crud.  actually there is not any smell or anything it seems to be burning really clean with very little smoke.

Look in the spark plug hole with a bright light and if the piston is shiny, all is clean. That is how Amsoil runs.
To clean it and free it of carbon and other debris, give it a dose of Amsoil Power Foam spray.
It's also a good degreaser.  Full instructions on the container and is around five bucks,to date.
