def should be walkable ice on some saller ponds but bigger lakes getting wind might be sketchy

Yeah it sure would be nice to get on the ice this weekend! Has anybody measured how thick the ice is so far?
I'm thinking we got to getting close to 5 inches.

Aug I doubt there's 5" most places. Maybe Heaters if you check. If bear season is over (?) it'll be safe to go cross country to some out of the way ponds. If not maybe the usual early popular spots.

Not quite ice fishing but it was as close as I could get last weekend on the Ramapo River in Oakland.

Bear season is over... and I did not get my bear.  It is deer season basically all the way to the end of January, so if you are heading through the woods put on an orange cap just to be safe.

Here in West Hunterdon County, ponds got totally wet on sunday with the rain, but this morning were totally locked up. With highs in the mid 30's for the next 10 days, I think central Jersey will be on in a week or so.

BE SAFE EVERYONE!
Wet or solid, I love fishing

FISH ARE FRIENDS! NOT FOOD! (But deer taste good ;) )

I won't be doing any ice fishing till I get a auger. i've always fished with my dad, but he moved away this summer and took his auger with him. got to watch my money this time of year. have a couple of things I'm waiting to sell that will more than pay for the auger. here's hoping(fingers crossed)
good luck if you get out this weekend guys, and be safe.

I agree with Chris. The ice won't be that thick that you'll have to have an auger. Or if you want to join us we'll have several augers at Mt. Hope Pond, hand, electric and gas. C'mon up!!

Spent a few ice seasons using just an axe and spud bar way back in the day. :)

I think it's all the commercialism and upgrading continuously that keep people away from the old standards. When was the last time anyone saw a forked stick with a line and hook laying on the ice?

When I first started I used a hatchet which worked much better when I found someone else's re-frozen holes from the day before.  I would just jig then, because if I had to bust open 5 holes for tip-ups I would not have made it off the ice!
