No such thing as a stupid question if ya don't honestly know the answer In the old days that was how you got to the fish, take a spud and start spuddin' I don't want to age myself but I can remember doing this to fish. We used one of Grandad's old concrete spud bars and started choppin'. Fun Fun

wow i couldn't amagine spuddin through 20in. of ice! must of been hard work! but if thats all that was available back then and you wanted to fish you had to do it!lol

On first ice, spud bars (or any 5' long pipe/bar) are used to "spud" the way ahead if the ice is iffy. If that bar goes through (or has less than a solid sounding thud to it) BACK OFF...      Cya....

It is a tuber that grows in the ground.  Great with fresh fried walleye and perch!
