buddy heater vs big buddy
« on: Dec 04, 2010, 06:45 AM »
I just bought a old one man flip over. I have a big buddy heater but it takes up lots of room. Is the regular butddy heater much smaller in size?  I know the little buddy is small just concerned it won't be enough on the real cold days.

I have a standard buddy, and I think i would find it a bit large for a one man. You may be better with the litlle buddy. it has a smaller footprint

I have three heaters for my Clam Voyager.  (2 Man)

The first heater is a sport cat, that I use when it is very nice out and just need to warm my fingers.

I then have the regular buddy heater, which I use 85% of the time.  It maxes out at 9,000 BTUs  of heat.

I also have in my truck, for really cold days the Big Buddy heater.  It maxes out at 18,000 BTUs of heat.

In a one man shack, the regular buddy heater (which takes one small tank) should have you covered on all but the most bitter cold days.
The Big Buddy takes two small tanks and a lot more space.

Hope this helps,

Wiener

I honestly can't imagine a regular buddy not keeping a one man shack warm regardless of conditions.  I use a regular buddy in my trekker 2 man along with a small fan to circulate the warm air and it has heated my shack sufficiently even on very cold and very windy days.  I have not fished in the dark though and I am sure that my black shack helps with the heating.

It does not make it quite T-shirt weather in my two man, but I definitely take my jacket off every time I'm in there.  I am quite impressed with the regular buddy, but I will most likely still get a big buddy for night fishing.  It never hurts to have a couple of heating options as stated previously.  ;D

I use the Coleman tent fan.  It takes one 'D' cell batter and lasts all day.  It is very quiet and has a magnet mound and plate so that you can either stick it to a pole or mount it to the fabric by placing the plate on the outside and the fan on the inside.

They cost about $13 and they have the about everywhere.

Does that fan help reduce the condensation that forms on the roof?

It sure does for me.  I no condensation at all for me since I started using a fan to circulate the air.

Of course now that I said that watch it change on me  :P

I think I am going to get one of those fans. How long do they last? Are they affected by really cold temps?

Temps don't seem to bother them.  Of course it's pretty nice in the shanty with the heater on and I mount mine up on the ceiling where all the warm air is.

It runs on one 'D' cell battery and it will run for well over a day on that.  I am still using the battery that was left in it from last year and I ran it for 4 - 5 hours solid on Saturday and it still seems fine.
