Clam 2000 mods I'm working on.
« on: Nov 24, 2010, 03:13 PM »
Well it's getting close to the hardwater season and I thought maybe I should get the to-do list for my ice gear started. I have a Clam 2000 I bought last year and I like everything about the Clam except for the ribbed plastic floor. So I bought some 1/4" luaun plywood and I am making inserts to cover the ridges. I got one of the inserts fitted in today, and will be doing the other one this weekend. Here are a couple different angles showing the difference with and without the plywood.
No more dropping jigs and spikes, or minnows into ridges and no more wobbly chair or heater. Another mod for this shanty are some telescoping bars to go across the front and back of the shanty between the upright posts to keep the material from blowing in when it's windy and to also mount the shelf unit I bought last year. I've also got some things to do to my homebuilt icesled.
Come on ice!!

You could also cut some foam strips and put in the ridges for a little insulation. Looks good

The project isn't completed yet, these are just some preview pics of the mod. For this season I am going to use the pieces of carpet that came with the shanty and put them in place over the plywood using the original plastic lugs that held it in. I would have coated it with Thompson's but it's too cold to do that now. Next year I plan on coating it with a non-skid coating.

I thought about that too. I need to price some foam board.

that is a great looking fit steellord : My 2000 smelled so nasty mid season from lost bait under the carpet that I had to take it to the car wash ..  I really like the inserts but my only concern would be not sealing the luan.. In my experience that material hates water.. I think I'll infringe on your great idea for my shack and deal with the smell of water seal in the house for a day..
Cool illustrations.. Thanks..

Thanks HT, I made cardboard templates and traced the patterns and then it was alot of hand-fitting to make everything just right. I thought about doing the water-seal in the house, but the boss would have had a conniption fit. If I have to replace a floor panel next year I still have the templates.

OK folks,
I did some more work on the shanty flooring this afternoon. I got the one side completely finished and got most of the hand fitting done on the remaining floor insert.
As you can see in the picture the piece of carpet that came with the shanty covers 90% of the floor. I think it will be good enough to get through this ice season.
I just have to do the final fitting around the trap door opening then drill the holes for the plugs and the flooring project will be complete.

Well I finished the shanty floor on Sunday. I think it came out quite well. Here's a pic of the finished job.

And a pic with some of my gear in it to see how it looked. I'm not sure if I'm going to use the folding camp chair. It took up a lot of room. I'd like to find a folding metal chair to use. I think it would be a little smaller.

I can't wait to get out on the ice to try it out.

It's called a ground blind wall shelf made by Ameristep for their hub style ground blinds.  Well apparently Clam thought it was a good idea because I found this on their site this year.

Thanks for the pics and the ideas. I think I will also do this to mine. Where did you get the adjustable poles you mentioned?

Those are still a work in progress. I'm using 1/2" & 3/4" thin-wall conduit to make them out of. But I don't like the sloppy fit of the 1/2" inside the 3/4" so I am trying to come up with something to make some bushings for the 1/2" conduit. I just got the clips to connect them to the upright supports and I may make one up and use it as is to see if it holds up. I'll post updates as I get time.

I had mine out this past Sunday and I am really happy with the floor. It is so much nicer sitting on a flat surface.

If your still looking for a seat to use, I have found that a fold-up hunting seat with a air cushion works great.

How heavy does the mod make it? Does it add a decent amount of weight?

I never liked using a folding chair in a shanty, I sat on a bucket for years before I ever used a shanty, and found the bucket to be better than a fold up chair.

Someone lead me to your post since I broke my 2000 floor last year(bout the size of my foot) and was looking for different ways to attch some sort of a sub floor or something to hold the floor together. I really like your flooring system and was wondering if you had it out yet and how it ws holding up. Does the luon board interfer when you fold the uprights down? I already started makeing a template so any info or help would be much appreciated.
Thanks in Advance,

I would say it added about 6 to 8 lbs. to the shanty. Not enough to make me sorry I added the floor. The floor doesn't interfere with folding up the shanty as far as I can tell.

I've had it out many times now and I am very satisfied with the floor. The floor is holding up well. I can't say the same for the plastic rivets that held the carpet down. I'm going to be looking for something to replace them with over the summer.

That's a thought, but the plastic rivets also hold the floor down. I'm gonna leave as is this season and in the summer find some low profile round head bolts to replace them with.

Most guys who have this type shelter will either modify a jet sled type sled to carry the shanty above the snow or build a custom sled to carry it. Here's a couple pic's of the sled I built for mine.

I hope these help.
