Thickness of ice for driving on?
« on: Nov 23, 2010, 09:10 PM »
I know it's early yet, but, what is a standard recommended thickness for ice that would be deemed "generally" safe to support an average 4-6000lb vehicle?

10 to 12 for me. Though I have driven on 8 to 9, but it was my small volkswagen car.  Still scary and have only did it once.  12 inches with any vehicle is a good number.

I'm probably in the minority but I'm scared to death of driving on the ice (and roller coasters :-[)

I drive a Pontiac 2007 Montana. I won't drive on unless ice is more than 12 " thick. :icefish:

You probly wont be driving on untill xmas or mid Jan. Depends on the weather and snow cover. At the very best probly just after xmas. Last year it was about mid Jan and hitting flood water.
I'm not stuck, I just like shovelling snow.

I don't drive onto anything less than 15" with my full sized truck but that's personal preference. The reason is because it's rare but not unheard of to drive over a gas pocket which might have 8" less ice. If you're only starting out with 10"-12" of ice then hit a spot with 7" or 8" less ice, well you do the math lol.
I fish therefore I am...
