Attaching jigs to your line
« on: Nov 02, 2010, 02:45 PM »
Just wondering what you guys do.  I personally like the action and play you can get with a good Uni knot and I tie all my jigs right do my line.  I mean, it takes what? maybe a minute to cut and re-tie the knot if you want to change your lure..big deal.

I just got done talking to a guy at work that I would consider pretty knowledgeable about fishing and he told me on light jigs he ties directly on but on something like a bucks-shot spoon he likes to change his lures a lot so he used snap swivel and hooks it right directly to the lure.  :o

What are you guys doing?

Same thing as the guy you were talking to typically. Jigs and tear drops for gills and crappie I tie right to the line. Pimples and buck shots for walleye and perch I usually use a snap swivel. If the bite is finicky I'll take off the swivel and tie direct to see if that helps.

I know it doesn't take long to tie knots, but I have snap swivels on about half my rods. Sometimes just lazy and don't feel like tieing knot after knot.

I use snap swivels on larger spoons (and smaller ones without split rings) or jigging blades like the Heddon Sonar to give them plenty of fluttering action. Every thing else gets tied directly to the line with Trilene knots.
A bad day of fishing beats anything else I'd be doing today.....

If it is a horizontal jig I tie directly to the jig so I can adjust how the jig hangs in the water. If it is a vertical hanging jig or a jigging rapala/darter I use the little fly fishing type snaps.

I tie all jigs directly, so I can choose and alter how they hang. for spoons I use quick snaps

I always tie a jig or spoon direct using a Uni or Palomar knot.

I tie directly to the line, I bring 8 rods already tied with different color jigs that whey I don't have to tie jigs on when its cold. Also don't have trouble seeing the hook eyes out on the ice.
If fishing is a sport are we considered athletes?

You get different actions with direct line tie vs a snap/swivel.  Some fish will take one presentation, while another will take the other one better.  So do both.

loop knot for horizontal presentation and Palomar knot for vertical.

I do this, I also use a uniknot for vertical as well.  I'd say 90% of the time I use a loop knot.

I use either small swivel snaps or the little knotless "snaps." I change jigs/lures litterally 50-60 times in a day.
