Any one that has a motor on it.  ;D. I hate the old hand powered ones now so I gave mine away.
Course that one did beat the h--- out of the old ice spud we used whaen I was a kid.

I bought the smallest Eskimo possible and I love it. Very reliable, but some guys need the biggest, which in my opinion, is not always the best. I saw a Swedish or German made auger at Bass Pro Shop for the same money I spent that had a push button start. It looked neat, but I obviously never used one.

I really like my Jiffy White Lightning, has never not started in 3 years that I have had it.  There is a good thread in the equipment forum dedicated to augers, a lot of helpful info and a lot of BS, but it is worth reading,

when it comes to augers, there are a few companies that make a quality machine, choose the one that best suits you needs and is in your price range. I personally use a Jiffy, I bought it 4 years ago and have yet to have an issue. It was between the Jiffy and a Strike Master as both where in my price range (under $400). The Jiffy was lighter and got rave reviews so it made my decision easier.

I think that I would go with the new propane powered Jiffy.

I dont think they are available in Saksatchewan until next season, both stores I've talked to in town didn't even know such a thing existed.

New jiffy engines are made in China
New strikemaster engines are made in Germany

Put a chinese car up against a german car.  Solo has been in business since the late 40s theyre tried and true engines. The chinese give us lead in everything. Tainted killer dogfood.  **censored**ty drywall that rots out your plumbing and anything metal in your house after a year and makes ya sick to boot.  **censored**ty plywood that makes people sick in the fema trailers.

For me this is a no brainer especially hearing rave reviews of the new augers.  The nils get good reviews also theyre very light but offer no chipper blade for reopening holes.

What's the best vehicle to buy? You'll get a lot of answers but you won't get closer to the "best" unless we get some details on what you want!

Do you drill holes inside a shanty? Do you need a 10 inch bit? Do you want something light?

The Strikemaster engines are indeed made in China.  They are designed by Solo which is in Germany.  Good marketing on Strikemaster's part.  Even though they are made in China, they seem to be pretty bulletproof.

I am extremely happy with my eskimo M43 mako 8". Starts on 2nd pull cold all the time. Push primer 2 times and it fires. half a pull when warm.
I have never had an issue with it. Blades stay sharp. I have drilled around 200+ holes per season and I am on the third season.
I used either klotz or citgo sea & snow oil mixed at 50:1.
I have read alot about amsoil sabre but not sure if I want to run a 100:1 mix.

I looked at a propane 4 stroke jiffy fri night at mills fleet farm. Way too pricey at $499.

You can run Amsoil Sabre mixed 50:1 if you choose. Lots of people do and I run it mixed about 80:1 in every 2 stroke I own.
It seems to go from zero to hero all some have to do is lie.

unless i needed a 10 inch hole i would go with the 8 inch nils handauger, its faster cutting than both my jiffy 30's with either 8 or 10 inch blades, no gas to mix and spill and two people can setup faster with the one hand auger. someday i might spring for the tanaka power head, but im really happy with this handauger. it cuts about a half inch per second and you dont need to put any weight pushing down, you just spin it. might even make an adapter for a cordless drill this year and see how that goes with the nils. you didnt mention what your needs are, if your looking for something smaller than 8 inch there is no need for a power auger, but pay the extra for the nils, its worth every penny

What is the best augar to buy this year?
That depends on your interest, not on someone elses. You'll get a hundred different responses. How much you want to spend? What are you fishing for (size" auger). Gas , hand, or electric is a starting point. Be more specific ........

I'll agree that it's all in the details. Both Jiffy and Strikemaster have new as of last year motors. I'm not sure what Eskimo is using as techumse is no more. I've got a 12 year old Jiffy  White Lightning and am happy with it. 2 hp. motor with an 8" bit. haven't had an issue with any fish coming through the hole. Nice and light. Last year I got a chance to try a Strikemaster lazer mag. It cut like a champ. For that kind of money though you can get a Nils with a proven motor. Only time will truely tell who has the better motor.

You won't be dissapointed going with an Eskimo. For the price it can't be beat. Great service also.

I got a 6" finbore last year.  it can bore a hole super fast by hand.  This year I got enough pennies saved up for a 10" Z71 Eskimo.    I will still use the hand auger on first ice and take it with me in the truck when the ice gets thicker.  but then it will be all eskimo doing the deed for me.

Tanakas made in Japan been around for 40 something years, still the same as they were 30 years ago.
Vipers been in use a few years now, not sure where they are made.
Solos are a German design made in China
Jiffy runs it's own design also made in China.

When Techumse was around you could get parts for them about anyplace, Tanakas are widely used by many industries and parts and service are easily found, not so sure about the newer motors though, havent seen and local advertisement for working on these or having parts avalible.

What is the best augar to buy this year?

If you type this question into the search box (change augAr to augEr) and do a little digging I'm sure you'll find a post for every brand, make and model in the world! Really though, search this topic and see what you find. It all comes down to personal preference.

IceGator here. Hooked my 7" HT Arctic Express Auger to it. No pulling to start...just push a button and go.
