Home Made Thermal Roof for Fishtrap
« on: Jul 22, 2010, 09:12 PM »
Dumpster diving has paid off for me once again!! I found four 4x6 sheets of high quality silver mylar insulation today. My plan is to slip it inbetween the roof bows and the canvas of my Voyager to keep the heat in and the condensation from dripping on me. I figure if it is fitted properly and secured to the roof bows, it should fold up with canvas with no fuss. This is some really nice stuff! It is like bubble wrap with poly on one side and silver mylar on the other. I hope the silver will help to reflect the heat and light back down to me while ending the dreaded drip. It seems very durable, yet it is super light and thin. I will post pictures of the project as I do it on the months to come.

 Nice find for sure Skipper.
You might have to wear a lifejacket because of the downward reflected heat melting the ice so quickly. LOL.
I think you will be able to fish on the coldest days of the winter with that stuff for sure.

You should be okay if you wear Elvis Presley Sunglasses in the Shelter and keep your landing gear down. LOL.

I'll bet those two young men can't wait for you to get your Voyager out on the ice this winter.  Great PIC.
There was someone on here last year that did just that with the same type of insulation material.  He really liked it and said the light reflection was great.

Looks very similar to Reflectix insulation, you'll be really happy with the results! I've got some on the roof of my Fish Trap Pro and it eliminates the overhead condensation entirely. Just make sure to dry the tent out fully after you use it, some condensation can get caught up between the insulation and the canvas when it thaws, then things start to smell a bit musty.
A bad day of fishing beats anything else I'd be doing today.....

Nice find for sure!  Should help with the heat loss overhead and the dripping problem.  I need to find something for my Otter house, just got it late last season and have yet to add to it.  I hope it fits well, good luck!

I did it to my voyager and scout last year just run it a few inches longer than the roof supports and slit the foil where your velcro attaches from the tent slide velcro through and attach to poles works good no drips reflects the light real well. I'll post pics if I can still find em. folding the tent up even seems easier now.had it running all te way down the back at first but couldn't make it work to my liking so trimmed it so its just the top. you'll like it skipper, Dylan

Thanks for the tip, I am really getting excited to do this. If it works as good as everyone says, I will have all the benifits of a thermal roof model without all the added weight and price. I guess sometimes a little redneck engineering can beat the factory!

I did this to both my Guide and Pro last year and I'm really glad I did. Works very well against that "dreaded drip", it'll save you a little money on propane over the course of the season too!  ;)

I have it in my Ice Cube too, I did find I didn't need my heater quite as soon either. I just slip the insulation in after its set up, and take it out before I tear it down.

I put the Reflectix material in my Guide last year. Yes it stops the dreaded condensation drip, but only because it traps the moisture between the tent material and the reflectix, so be sure to dry out your shack between trips. I would agree it made it warmer with my Mr. Buddy Heater, but it also limits my Blackberry signal (good if you don't want to be bothered, bad if you're trying to keep up with football scores).

Installation note, make sure to keep the Reflectix stretched tight to the ceiling, otherwise it likes to droop and hamper an agressive hook setting motion.

Good score.  It's things like this that keep me dumpster diving, proudly.  No need for a foil hat to keep the Gummint mind control machine outcho head  anymore either

The employment of effort, hard work, time, and energy put in locating fish will offend noone.

I put reflectix on the top of my Team Wild 2 sled.  I think it does make a difference although I didn't really test it scientifically.  It definitely makes it brighter so if you use your house for spearing a lot you might not want to go this route.  I had about a 3x5 roll of it left over and I keep that in the sled and when it's really cold I unroll it and put it behind the seat along the back of the shanty.  That really helps to keep your back side warmer on especially cold or windy days.
