I drive a little Chevy Aveo hatchback. I have to drop the rear seats. All my gear goes into a Pelican sled and my Ice Cube shelter slides in at an angle to fit. The small car limited what shelter I was able to buy and the cube was the largest that I was able to fit in there. None of the flipover shelter of decent size were an easy fit

Wiskeyfish if you do not already own a shelter of some type measure the cargo carrying area of your vehicle. Then compare these measurements to the various shelters on the market. One of the hub style tent shelters maybe your best bet if you have really limited cargo space. There are two companies that sell rack systems for vehicles Thule and Yakima look through their offering and see what if anything will fit your vehicles roof. Just remember the weight of the shelter when loading it onto the roof you may need help due to the size and weight of the shelter. Most of the bigger flip over style portable are close to if not over one hundred pounds.

If you have any friends with a portable, try to fit their shanty into your car before you buy one.

depends on the portable. I've got a hub style portable which folds down and packs into a bag that is about 5"x5"x18".

Always buy a car that either is a wagon or has fold down seats. Remember to measure the trunk size to see if your sled will fit.

Either that or strap it to the roof with rachet straps, w/ a roap  leading to the front bumper to stop the wind from peeling your gear off your roof. Remember to open all car doors before you attach straps so that you can get in and out of car.

Might be pricey, but Thule makes all kinds of rack systems, look used maybe. Also, a guy at my work pulls a small trailer with his corolla that holds his snowmobile and ice fishing gear

Wiskeyfish as I and Relheok posted a company named Thule sells different types of cargo racks and Carrier's they should have a model that will fit your Corolla. If not try a firmcalled Yakima that carries similar products.

   www.thule.com                                www.yakima.com

These systems are not cheap but with care will last many years ,you should only need a basic rack system with straps. In time if needed you can purchase accessories to make the system more versatile. Good luck in your search for a transport solution ,check out the websites I'm sure either company has a solution to your problem.

I just checked Thule and Yakima's website's and it appears each has racks that will fit your Corolla. If nothing else log onto either site enter the information about your vehicle and see what is available and where dealers are located. Once you know the model number of the system you need you can also try EBay or Craigslist to try and find a used model. Both companies basic roof rack system will cost around $300.00 dollars before Tax and shipping .

Strap it or tie it. Makes absolutely sure its not going to slide or move.

Look at the Clampets, they strapped all that stuff on their truck, and moved to Beverly just fine. HIlls that is.

I used roof racks before and they work great. Just remember they have a weight rating too.

I have a Trap II that I transport around with my Mercury Sable sedan. There are two ways I've found to transport it. First is the one I use to take it to lakes, which is to angle it into the trunk and use 2 rachet straps to hold it in place. It sticks out at a wierd angle and worried me the first couple times I used it, but I've driven over 3 hours with it like that and it held fine. The second is what I do to take it down state with me, basically only do it this way because the wife and daughter have the trunk full of clothes and what not (way to get the important stuff  ::)). I'll put an old blanket or quilt on the roof then set the shack on that and use 3 rachet straps to hold it in place. Run the straps through the doors. Have driven 8 hours like this without a problem. Also you can put all of your gear in the sled before you strap it down so it saves space that way.

Maine, thats my basic idea for transporting long distance. Just not as much weight, I lay a blanket down so I don't scratch the roof, and I use something a little stronger than binder twine. I also try to center it a bit more  ;D

If you don't like the roof rack idea, you could try a small utility trailer and hitch on you car.

I saw a small car with a tow hitch in the back and a cargo rack attached.  It looked like it could fit my Clam Yukon, should fit yours too.  I would be much easier than trying to lift the shelter all the way to roof of your car.
