They kinda look like a bee, but they are not, that is a common misconception though ;)

And they are called Drone flies because they look like male bees, aka drones; drone bees have no stingers and neither do drone flies.

And yet, they would still make trapper scream and run away.   ;D

actually i'm talking poop !  i  do  know  there  wax months  but as  a kid we  used bee larve  for  real as bait  mousies  i'm not  sure of some  kind of fly, spikes are  just maggots that turn into  blow flies...another  thing we  jusd was   golden rod grubs  , you  find standing golden rod  find  the  bulbs and  cut them open  theres a  grub looks like a spike

What do you know, I finally can make use of my natural resorces degree! Most true grubs become beetles (like the oak leaf grub), the crane fly larva, also known as a leatherjacket, looks like a giant maggot, usually a inch or so in length and can be found under rocks in mosts streams and ponds (and make very good bait for brook trout), waxworms (actually considered a type of caterpillar) are larva of the wax moth (caterpillars become moths or butterflys), and spikes and mousies are both forms of maggots (the larval form of flies in the order diptera) therefore both become flies.

FYI, it's illegal to collect aquatic insects for bait in trout waters in NY.

Waxworms are the larval stage of the greater wax moth.

Greater wax moth.

Maybe you got the "Africanized" strain of waxworms Trap  ;D

Maybe these questions are being pondered too deeply....maybe the real answer is obvious and right there in front of us...my simple answer to all of the questions above--what do these become----well..if used correctly..ultimately these all become FISH FRIES!!!!! ;D

I continue to use mine. Ice jigs too. Tip the jigs with spikes, put em under a slip bobber and hammer the gills! Waxies make great bait for stream trout as well.

Trap,
I could see that happening in times past. With the dramatic loss of bees in the last 5 years, it's unlikely any beekeeper would sell larvae any more.
